Installing a ho cam in a 99 sp500

Cots of the carb and intake manifold(around $550) isn't worth the effort on a a 17 year old machine for the hp gain imo.The only difference in the HO cam is the duration(holds valves open a tad longer),lobe height is the same on both style cams.A lot of people have just swapped cams with no problems on non HO machines. Plus you have the best carb(BST34) as far as reliability and easiest to rebuild when it's needed. The BST40 carb was always dribbling gas,the float was hard to adjust to keep it from doing this, plus the long cable idle adjuster could be a pain versus the straight idle adjuster on the BST34.Stick with the updated cam and enjoy it as is.

I put a Web Racing cam in my Arctic Cat and a 5 degree advance timing key and a K&N filter and removed the restrictive flame arrestor from the muffler. Was easily able to tune my stock Keihin carb to make it really haul azz. I ended up running the Dynojet needle on the 4th c-clip and fattened the main jet from a 150 to a 155. You may have to slightly richen the pms screw and go up 1 or 2 size main jet, but thats a wild guess. My guess, the Web cam is a lot hotter than the HO Polaris cam, but if someone makes a timing advance key for it, you might see a nice gain, but may have to run premium gas.
