Trail boss 250 idle/throttle adjustment
#1
I posted a week or 2 ago about a 250 trail boss I was picking up as a parts machine. Well it turned out to be nearly mint, was just missing a throttle cable and an engine mount. So I'm working on making it a running machine instead. I used the throttle cable off the original project machine along with carb on the new one. It runs beautifully. When I first got it running it was idling very high. I adjusted the the throttle cable alittle and it idles great. Trouble is it basically hits a wall when you pin the throttle, almost like hitting a rev limiter. I'm not very good with these 2 strokes it's the first I've ever tinkered with. Not sure what I should be doing

Hopefully you have the air box and filter installed as this can cause one to run lean and bang out so to speak. It does have a limiter, but it's a reverse limiter module. All of them fail sooner or later and possible that it could be limiting in forward range as some have done. Just pull the black wire from it and you should be able to tell if that's the problem or not.Located under the front close to the cdi module. If it still has a limiting type problem then that also could be worn ramp buttons in the rear clutch causing problems or a worn belt or a combination of both.

Thanks for the response, yes it is running a full factory air box and filter. i believe the belt to be worn, I just got it running today. It seems to slip in reverse (it may be slipping in forward gear also first real personal experiance with this type of machine) unless it's on flat smooth ground or I suppose it could be in the clutch/converter also. I have yet to pull the cover. Even in nuetral thumbing the throttle,it will seem like its hitting a limiter. I will look into the things you mentioned next opportunity I get.

You have to push the over ride button on the left control switch when in reverse or it will limit. That was it's intended purpose but they fail over time and can cause problems. The three ramp buttons in the rear clutch wear down along with belts and can cause a similar type limiting problem if ground down bad enough. Item#5. I was wondering what that switch was actually for. Still learning. I'll definetly open it up and take a look at the belt/clutch pieces. I'm kinda wondering if I over compensated on the throttle cable adjustment and now it's not opening up all the way wot. When it was idling high I could run the throttle out with no issue it just wouldn't idle low enough to put in gear

You might want to check compression if you can't get it have a slow steady idle. Could be on the low side(100 psi or less) or could even be leaking crank seals that a lot of people overlook than cause one not to idle properly if you're sure it's not carb related.

It purrs like new, I just dropped the idle down because it was to high to shift into gear without grinding. It was like quarter throttle open sounding. But smooth. I dropped the idle way down and its steady and smooth just really low. Machines has compression I wouldn't be playing with it if it didn't it runs very strong I just need to dial it in and make sure belt isn't slipping and make sure my carb is fully open under throttle.

Played with it some for the few minutes I had. I think it is that switch. If I depress it in reverse it overrides it and goes like hell, but forward it is limited. Also in nuetral. I'll mess with it more this weekend probably. Thank you for the insight

Just pull the black wire from the limiter module to disable it and all should be well...Then you wont have to even worry about pressing the over ride at all. I've had to do a bunch like this over the years when they started limiting in forward range or would die in reverse or would only keep running in reverse if you held the over ride button down first then placed it in reverse. This is a sign that the module has shorted out.

Thank you so much for the help! I would have been ripping my hair out for awhile on that one. I pulled that black wire and wow, woke right up. Just need to replace the rear shock now and my wife can finally ride with me. She will be hard to keep with though on my old 250es big red, this polaris rips. Not a bad way to spend 300 bucks
