Grizzly vs. Sportsman500

Justin, dont act stupid anymore, okay?
I have seen both quads. Personally, I don't care about what brand it is, I would rather buy a Sportsman than get a Grizzly for free.
It's just way too big. Its width would make it useless for narrow trails.
The 600cc engine in the Grizzly has a slight torque advantage over the Polaris, (i say Polaris because they have 3 500cc models) but it doesn't make as much power. Also, I don't know if it matters as much, but it makes its peak torque at 5500 RPM, pretty high when you consider that torque is the roatational force that you need to get any heavy load moving (which may be quad and rider itself or while towing).
Don't even comment about the zerk fittings, I'd rather have grease in my quad than water. I'm sure most of us would. If you're too lazy to spend an hour every few months instead of a half hour taking care of your quad, then you might as well just trade yours in every 5 miles. Big deal, so the IRS on the Sportsman 500/335 takes a while to lube, it's not hard to pump a little grease into it once in a while.
The afforementioned, supposedly hard to grease IRS system that the Sportsman uses is far superior in design to the solid-axle design of the Grizzly. Although, just like in trucks the solid axle may be stronger, the IRS is guarenteed to keep both tires parallel to the ground. That's not even mentioning the fact that it has the ability to keep the rider level even if the right side of whatever you're going over is up to 9.5 inches higher/lower than the left side. (The Sportsman boasts 9.5 inches of wheel travel). Although .4" isn't much, the Sportsman also has more ground clearence.
I would rather have a liquid cooled engine myself, but either system is good. I just figure if most cars use liguid cooling than my quad can too.
I didn't say that the Grizzly was a bad quad by any stretch of the imagination. But, the only thing I can see that the Grizzly surpasses the Sportsman 500 on is torque. Although torque is important, the Sportsman 500 offers nearly as much torque as the Grizzly, with other benifits.
And anyone who doubts the robustness of the IRS on the Sportsman models out to take a look at the control arms on it, they're nearly as big as one for a full sized 4wd vehicle!

God I rambled! Sorry everyone!
And just so everyone doesn't get the wrong idea, I say that I'd rather have a Polaris than a Grizzly because I think it's best for what I'd use it for. But if you think that the Grizzly is more suited to your uses, than I suggest you get what is good for you!
For me, if I couldn't afford a Magnum or Sportsman 500, I'd definitely consider the Yamaha Big Bear or Kodiak, as well as other makes. Any quad is better than no quad, however!!!!

i think that all you young people should buy a polaris scrambler 500 4x4.It's great in the trails and you can go through any thing with true 4 wheel drive. You can also race it in 2 wheel drive. If your young then get it and if your older then get the polaris sportsman 500 4x4. POLARIS RULES!

Polaris rules huh is that when its running or not take a look into the artic cat 500 and get the best of both worlds water cooled, semi rear independant suspension, can take it in and out of 4 wheel drive, automatic suppose to be one of the best auto's on the market...steers great, climbs great not to bulky I ride some of the slim and dangerous trails in WV and it does great.
back and front disc brake, full floors, comes with great climbing titan tires great tires to come from the factory. And if anyone wants to give me hell over this message bring it on...some of the bad things I have heard on the grizzly was front bearings rusting, OVERHEATING to a point that it wouldn't start till it cooled. On the sport great ride and handling but hard to keep running many break downs this last info came from various places in the forum so don't give me hell do a search and give those people hell. The reason I responded to this message is that I had considered all three of these atv and went with the AC 500 because of the reasons in this message and I love it....oh yeah pretty good price on the auto got mine for $6100 w/winch although I have heard of better prices a hair bit cheaper out west of WV...

DreamofPolaris,What are you talking about when you say the grizzly is just way to big?It is the same width as the Sportsman and weighs 97 pounds less than the Sportsman. As far as trail riding it can fit in tighter places than a sportsman. You also said that the Grizzly doesnt make as much power[WRONG]as the Sportsman. On a dyno machine the Grizzly has 4-5 more rwhp than the sportsman.Another advantage the Grizzly has over the 500 is Speed.Just try drag racing a 00'Grizzly with your Sportsman!

Here we go again. It's turning into the controversy that took place on a Honda post-Magnum 500 versus Foreman. It is a mere 50 posts of nothing but literary immaturity. Evertbody put everybody else's quad down. Don't start that mess here; and watch you language.

That's a bunch of bulljive. The Sportsman makes more power than the grizzly. I don't know what specs you're looking at, but a Sportsman is narrower than a Grizzly.
I don't own a Sportsman, but if anyone wants to buy me one, I'll take it. If you buy me a Grizzly, give me the title so I can trade it, or keep it.
