Yamaha1,

I,ve seen your replies in several of the threads here. Why are you trying to cause more trouble? Are you having a bad day and looking for a fight? From reading your replies it is obvious which 4x4 ATV you think is best. If you can't be civil and friendly, stay out of here.

Chris

Good Point Chris,
I have no brand loyalty. I own 2 Polaris quads and will discuss their short comings with anyone. For the most part I am very happy with my quads. Yamaha1 seems to think anything Yamaha makes is the best. No manufacturer has that luxury that I know of. If Yamaha would just fix the problems with the Banshee that have been well documented for the past 13 years I would buy one. Yamaha makes some great products, so do a bunch of other manufacturers. So Yamaha1 if you have nothing useful to say, JUST DON’T SAY IT!!!
Scott.

Okay Yamaha1,
Assuming you really care. I feel qualified to answer as I have ridden both quads. Not at the same time and not under the same conditions. I rode the Yamaha in North Carolina and I rode the Sportsman in New York.

Grizzly Pros:
More torque.
Maintenance seems easier (much)!
You can turn 4 wheel drive on or off.
May have a slight reliability edge on the Sportsman (no real proof on this).

Sportsman Pros:
Much smoother ride.
Does not bounce around when the trail riding gets fast.
Has true 4 wheel drive. If you don’t think this feature is important you need to ask why at Quad pulls they have Polaris Quads pull in a separate class.
Water cooled (probably not even a concern).
You can turn 4 wheel drive on or off.

Grizzly cons:
Does not have true 4 wheel drive.
Seems to bounce around when driven at higher speeds.
Not water cooled (Not that this matters much to me).

Polaris Cons:
A ton of zerk fittings to grease (Some guys, like me, would rather have this than sealed bearings. Remember sealed bearings became popular because we were too lazy to maintain the ones that require grease.).
May not be quite as reliable as the Grizzly (Again, I have no hard facts on this).
That water cooling is just more things that could go wrong (Again, just my opinion).

Hope that helps. I didn’t intend to offend but after seeing some of your post felt exactly as I stated and make no apologies. Prove me wrong and I will apologize.
Scott.

Can I please bring something to light here? Please? Okay. A ZERK FITTING takes exactly 4 seconds to grease!!!! HELLO! That's it! If I see one more person "complain" about the "millions of grease fittings" on a Sportsman 500.....how in the he*l can this be a disadvantage to owning a SP500? It really blows my mind. How can someone call that "excessive maintenence?"

This is just MY two cents, but I can point out a few shortcomings of the Grizzly...first of all--if you read ANY of the reviews in the ATV magazines, many Grizzly owners themselves complain about how the machine runs hot, is noisy, doesn't warm up quickly, has chinsy (sp?) footrests, etc. Now these are owners who reported these observations, not me.

Me? I just think there are some obvious advantages with the Sportsman 500...and I don't care whether this persuades you to get one or not...these are just my observations. First, just look at the racks. At least on the Sportsman you can set a can of Pepsi down on the composite rack. On the Grizzly, like almost all Yamaha products, the darn tube racks are like 4 inches apart....why this is like the way it is is beyond me.

Another thing I like about the SP500 is that it is water cooled and the whole engine isn't sticking you in the left foot! I'm not even going to mention the independent rear suspension, etc. because some people still like the straight rear axle for some reason.

In closing, I'd just like to say that I ride with like 6 guys each weekend. We DON'T sit around and rip on each others' ATVs! I think the "advantages" and "disadvantages" of ANYTHING is clearly the opinion of the user/owner etc. Come on guys---it's like asking "what's the best pickup truck?"

For someone to come on here and ask "what's the BETTER feature" etc. is just a plain stupid question! Each ATV is different...maybe some people don't LIKE to set Pepsi cans on their racks when they take a break......

I've never been on a sportsman, but I've been on a Yamaha Grizzly several times, and they are incredibly hot. Just bought a magnum 500 and it runs cooler than my old Yamaha 250 timberwolf. My friends Grizzly has been in the shop a few times, the carb float drain kept draining gas, took a while to figure out where the matter was coming from, the gasket in the gas on/off valve had detierated into little pieces, making their way into the carb. jets, causing the over flow condition. His rear brakes went out last season, so the grizzly can have problems. At first I wanted a grizzly but after reading about the magnum 500 vs grizzly, and looking over the magnum and what it offers that the grizzly dosn't, high beam, composite racks, more foot room, much cooler running engine, single brake lever, better drive-ability, I went with the Mag. and do believe I made the right choice, of course I only have about 100 miles on my Mag. but so far it's great.
