Default 400HO/500HO clutches?

Are the 400HO/500HO clutches the same? I am planning on going over mine thus winter, but I'd be money ahead to buy new.

Polaris Sportsman 500 Primary Drive Clutch 1996 2013 | eBay

If I buy an EBS primary, will I need the secondary? Is the end belt different?

Yours is the non ebs clutch. Same as all the early models(including the Sportsman 500) had until about 99 when ebs came out. If you wanted to go to an ebs clutch( I personally wouldn't) you'd have to get an ebs driven clutch for it to operate right and the correct belt. This is a good price on the Niche non ebs clutch at 214 bucks though, less than 1/2 the price on an oem drive clutch. In short basically all drive and driven non ebs clutches from a 250,300,350,400,425,500 would work on other machines.

Thanks OPT. I'll check again before I buy the tools and rebuild/clutch kit. Will stick with the non EBS, they seem more plentiful.

That's crazy, a 2012 does not have EBS but my 2001 came with it stock? It should be the other way around.

I thought EBS was just a one way bearing in the primary and had nothing to do with the secondary.

Basically ebs is just a one way bearing, but look back at all the posts on people that have mixes ebs and non ebs clutches and all the problems they've had. One problem is getting a belt that works right for both style clutches. The 2012 400 was one of the last of the Fugi engines and really considered an economy model therefore it got the cheaper non ebs clutch. My two cents is the non ebs clutches are less worrisome and easier to repair and align with each other. Plus the ebs needs the grooved belt so it can ride in the one way bearing properly, but it usually has different dimensions than the 3211077 non ebs belt which causes problems. Had a bunch of people at the shop try this also and after all their problems either found the proper ebs driven clutch with the roller buttons or just went back to a no ebs system and correct belt.

The odd thing is my 2001 H.O uses the same belt (3211069 ) as the 2001 500 magnum which I think did not have EBS.

The link you showed shows a 2001 Sportsman 500 that had one model that used a non ebs clutch system and also an ebs system. Look at the drive clutches on this model.. Shows both non and ebs clutches in the parts diagram. The 3211069 was an odd ball belt that was used on some models including the Magnum 500... Even Amazon still has the belt and at the questions at the bottom shows some of the confusion that people have had trying to use it in place of the 3211077 non ebs belt even though it was used on the Magnum 500 non ebs system also. I went through that at the shop also on this belt.https://www.amazon.com/Genuine-1998-.../dp/B000KUGZKO It was basically too tight and too wide and cause problems where the 3211077 belt was normally used. In a nut shell this belt is to be used mainly on these models. The 2001-2004 Sportsman 500 and Magnum 500.Also used on the Magnum 325 and ATP 500.Use it anywhere else and creeping problems happen.

Usage : 3211069

It was optional from 2011 to 2014 - the Camo 500HO was the only one that had EBS standard. It was optional when I bought my 400HO, but I gapped it when I bought my 400HO.

But I have 5,600km/3,500 miles on mine, still on original brakes. Thanks to the tip from OPT, I just butter the throttle while going down hills, this keeps the clutches loaded up which is the poor man's EBS.

Same thing many people learned on the old 2 strokes that would free wheel even faster going down hills than the later 4 strokes did that at least had some natural braking effect from the engine. We had a bridge embankment close to the shop with a steep slope that I practiced on and even took a few people down that complained about this to show them how to load the clutches up along with using their brakes down the slope. To their amazement they saw how it worked. It goes against the minds thinking process to give an atv throttle down a hill and I admit it took me a little while to get the hang of it myself. That was the main reason for coming up with ebs clutches. Some liked them on the 4 strokes, some didn't. Even had a couple people that had ebs systems order complete non ebs clutches for change out because they didn't like the abrupt slowing down that pushed them toward the bars. To each his own I guess..

I did that with my dads 97 Sportsman without EBS. Another trick if the hill is really steep is to that trick while in low range then it really holds you back.
