Default Argh!! Loud ticking, hair raising noise! PLEASE

Hey all

I have been doing a lot of work to the ole' 2010 Sportsman 400 (Hawkeye) lately. Got it mostly back together, still need a new prop shaft and put back on all the plastics. Started it up today and noticed this gawd awful ticking sound. It sounded like it was coming from the oil reservoir and when I removed the cap it gets louder. It doesn't start as soon as the engine runs but about 30 seconds after. I have attached a video that captures what I am describing really well. (Remember it's about the sound not the picture)

While the bike was all apart I changed the oil even cleaned out the sump. I keep trying to create the air suction in the oil reservoir but can't tell if I am doing it right as I don't hear the sound that the book describes. Any help at all will be greatly appreciated!

One thing to note is that this thing has the roller clutch maybe it is just a reverberation from that? Never noticed it before tho.

TiA

Yes this is a Fugi engine mated to a Hawkeye gear case and clutch system. You can hear all sorts of noises radiating through the oil tank including the sound of oil itself shooting back into the tank, but the most common is clutch noise, rocker arm ticking. That's what it sounds like to me. You can pull the clutch cover, listen for any noise or simply pull the drive clutch off and crank it back up and check for the same noise. If it's quieter, probably time to check out the rollers and pads in the drive clutch. Not a bad idea to check valve clearance also.Plus on priming the pump as the manual says, upon releasing the pliers you may or may not hear an air hiss, but wouldn't worry. The pump will prime itself without blocking the tank vent, just does it a tad slower.

Still havn't got to the bottom of this yet. Really starting to think that this noise is just normal and I am just noticing it now as you can only hear it with the oil reservoir cap off.

I have the clutch cover off and when you hear the noise the clutch isn't even turning yet. I still need to check the valve clearance. Also, once I am checking every thing I am going to run it in a controlled environment and check the engine temps and the oil temps. If the oil isn't heating up I will know that the engine isn't getting the oil it needs.

still trouble shooting it if there is anymore advice I would really appreciate it.

What I really think you're hearing is the return oil squirting into the oil tank. I could remove the dipstick from the old metal and plastic Sportsman 500 oil tanks and hear the same sound along with metallic sounds from the engine.

I think you are right. I went into the garage with your idea and pinched the intake hose and the noise was still there. Then pinched the return hose and the noise stopped by you could feel and hear the oil backing up so had to let go pretty quickly. This also makes sense with the delay in the sound when starting, oil has to get through the whole system.

Thanks OPT I am going to put this one to bed but watch my temps on the test drive making sure they don't get too high.

Just built a new prop shaft last night and will be installing it tomorrow. Last thing to do is clean up the clutch housing and give it a good wash before putting back on all the Plastics then TEST DRIVE!

Been a long 4 months, luckily I have the RZR

thanks
