Default Piston installation

We took apart the top end to replace the base gasket which turned out to be bad.We went to go put the piston back in the jug and it would not go in.We tried clamps ratcheting ring compressors and finally got the rings in. But now the piston will not knock down into the jug.Any help would be appreciated.

Would help to know if it's a 4 stroke or 2 stroke. 2 stroke has a ring end lock on the intake side,if a four stroke then sounds like you still have a ring catching whether it's a compression or oil ring. Also if new rings were installed were they installed with the marks up?

you should be able to compress the rings with your finger tips and the weight of the jug alone should help it slide down. Did you ensure the rings are not hung up on a pin? Did you oil the cylinder before installation?

If you're using any kind of force to get the jug down then something is wrong...

This is about as simple as a piston and rings gets.If it's new rings make sure the marks are up, squeeze the rings and make sure the ring ends are at the locating pins. Same thing if you haven't removed the rings. You haven't said either way on the rings. Here's a simple video on this.Plenty of others on you tube.
