03 sportsman Mikuni carb question
Polaris 700 twin 2003
I was at rough idle and sputtering on the mountain and it would die at idle and hesitate.Long way from anywhere.
Hauled it home as I had some cleaning to do on it. Adjusted idle screw up and checked air box and hoses for leaks .Plugs just replaced the other day all fluids and more.
Let the quad warm up till the fan came on them ran it in low it did fine. Now it is sputtering at 3/4 throttle in high.
Has a Mikuni carb. I am going to either rebuild it with a Shindy or replace it.
They have caltrac and a zoom zoom carbs for the same cost but I fear these are pieces of crap.
I already pulled the carb.
1. So better to rebuild with Shindy?
2.Are caloric and zoom zoom crap?
3.If this does not fix it could it be he dreaded Ducati ignition system?

My money is on #3,"the dreaded Ducati ignition system". DON'T get a cheap Chinese carb. If you have to, get a Shindy carb kit.That way at least you can eliminate the carb as a problem. Plus pull the fuel line from the carb and crank the engine over.Should be a steady stream of fuel if the fuel pump is ok. If you narrow it down to the ignition,Babbits has the cheapest price around on the ignition kit. Around 500 bucks. P.S. One last thing is to loosen the clamp at the intake manifold to make sure the intake boot isn't split causing it to run lean and bog. A lot of boots splits happen under the clamp and hard to see unless you slide the clamp back and inspect closely.

Just bought it and then found it for $10.00 cheaper ! Oh well I will also replace the one fuel filter in the line. I am starting to have a bear of a time keeping this Polaris on the hunt. I have rebuilt replaced everything but the engine and ignition system. It's a rough mountain I ride. I always appreciate your knowledge and help sir!

I got in my shindy rebuild kit and took carb apart.I have a couple questions for you.
The pilot jet was exactly from tight in 3 1/4 turns out. It did not have any brass cap to be drilled out. Is 3 1/4 out about right?
Also does the plastic asm,jet block need to be removed? It has two funky screws on it and I do not seem to have any parts to replace in there.
My altitude here is under 2000.

Sounds like someone has been into the carb before. 3 1/4 turns is usually too much. 2-2.5 turns out for a base setting and you can fine tune this setting when the engine warms up.Turn out slowly until it starts to stumble and then back in 1/2 turn. The jet block doesn't have to be removed.
