2000 Polaris Sportsman 500 Running issue
We have a 2000 Polaris Sportsman 500. It wouldn’t start good so we replaced the carburetor and fuel pump with new ones and now it starts like a charm, and idles great. When you open the throttle it dies, like it is not getting fuel. Any suggestions?

Check the exhaust lobe on the cam. This model was in the year range for soft cams that many of them had. Most would idle ok,but looked like this one pictured and would either die when you gave it throttle or back fire out the back of the carb.https://atvconnection.com/forums/pol...ml#post3165857 Plus not crazy on the aftermarket Chinese carbs, but make sure the jets are the same as the oem Mikuni and the opening are clean and blown out.

Thanks for the advice but we don't think it is a cam issue (but you are the pro so will check that out for sure). Odd thing is, it ran good once it was started before replacing the carburetor, but it just wouldn’t start. We had to spray starting fluid on the air cleaner to start, but once started it ran good for the rest of the day. Once the carburetor was replaced, it started right up and idled great. I thought the problem was solved. But once I try to feed it gas, and open the throttle, it dies like it isn’t getting any fuel.

Then you could be lucky and it's a stopped up jet/trash in the carb. Plus again make sure the jets are the same as the oem carb and the air box and filter have to be installed also or it won't run right either. Many folks forget about this one.If none of this helps, then I'd pull the cam cover and have a look see.
