I have a 1995 sportsman 400. I found this part on top of the skid plate below the engine on the left side, and it was covered in grease.
the atv runs good and I dont have any reason to think anything is broken. I'm not sure if I left this there from another project, or if it belongs to this atv and fell off from somewhere. Can anyone identify what this might be if it goes to this atv.
Looks like parts out of the rear axle eccentric on polaris scramblers, xplorers etc. Its been a while since I had to order one but I vaguely recall ordering the entire eccentric for an older machine and it subbed to the "new style" which takes that spacer. Has yours ever been changed?

but I'm not sure what the metal ring is. From the grooves on the outside wall, it looks like it might have been the inside ring of a brearing from somewhere. If they were from a wheel I have no idea how they ended up on the skid plate. The only install I have done near where I found them was I replaced the front left side shock a while back.

It does look like a "front strut seal"(hub seal is actually about 1/2 inch thick) but it also looks like this rear housing seal. https://www.ebay.com/itm/Polaris-Sea...1:pf:0&vxp=mtr I was incorrect on the rear housing subbing to the new style, thats incorrect on my part. I think it subbed to a new number, but not a new style. Sorry. Memory gets worse everyday!!! The size of the collar, and the wear on it, resembles the collar on the rear axle of machines I have torn down in the past. Like you said though, its the later style and not the 95 like yours. Thats puzzling. Although if it is the parts i believe them to be, you have nothing to worry about because they didnt come off your machine. But the question now is, Where did they come from?????
