Polaris Sportsman 500 1998 4x4 problem

I recently let my friend use my fourwheeler and he got stuck and was trying to back out and hit the override button to engaged the 4 wheel drive, while the back tires were spinning and he heard something snap, and the 4 wheel drive doesn't work anymore. Any ideas on what could have broke?

guessing since neither front wheel is spinning that broke something in the front gear case, good time to take apart the hubs anyways to clean and service them to make it's not in the nub area.
