I am new here and joined hoping someone can help me with a very frustrating problem. This is a bit of a long story so I will condense it and let you know the basics. My 04 500 sportsman HO has not worked properly for a few years. I basically parked it out of frustration. It lacks power and runs very poorly. Engine breaks down stumbles under load and backfires. It starts and idles fine. A very long story but have rolled out almost everything. Engine is fine. compression is perfect. low miles on engine. chawed plug wire and cap (new), changed plug, changed coil, checked timing, changed stater, etc etc. only thing I havnt changed is cdi. Now here is the interesting thing. I unplugged the speedo and it seems to work ok? I only drove it a short ways but think it works fine this way. I know speedos are known to go on these bikes but normally takes AWD or other issues. I haven't heard of this? It is almost like it acts the same way in forward as it does in reverse. I tried pushing the reverse button in forward but no difference. Anyone dealt with this before? I didn't want to buy a new speedometer. Is there way to fix this?
