Front brakes
#1
I just finished replacing the front pads on my 99 sp500, and I have 2 questions. First, the set screw that adjusts the calipers, what is the correct way to set the tension? I just backed it off until I was able to freely spin the hub. Is this the correct procedure? Second, what is the sensor mounted to the front right caliper for? I was just wondering.

X, I wondered the same thing about the set screw when I was working on my Scrambler's front brakes. The set screw was protruding about 1/4" from the caliper from the factory. The documentation says turn in until inboard brake pad hits rotor, then back off 1/4-1/2 turn. If I do this, the set screw is totally inside the caliper, and I have very little free play in my brake handle, making it very hard to pull. I turned the set screw to about the factory setting, and loctited it. Works fine. Don't know about the sensor, my Scrambler doesn't have one.

Mdelby,
That wasn't the case with my set screws. Both were flush with the surface of the caliper. I turned them in until the pads grabbed, then backed it off about the same amount as you replied, 1/2 turn. But the pads seem to rub quite a bit like that, the hub doesn't free wheel at all. so I gave it another 1/2 turn, just that little bit more frees them up quite a bit. Do you think I should loctite them? I didn't notice any residue from the factory, so I assumed they didn't loctite them.

X, yeah I would loctite them. But instead of loctite, let me tell you a little secret. Go out and buy yourself a bottle of teflon pipe sealant. It does the same thing as loctite non-permanent and is cheaper.
