Here's the deal. 99 scram 400. I just got home from riding and while cleaning and saw that the boot was torn. I dismantled the front end and removed the boot. #1 How do I put the factory clamp back on. Please don't tell me the same way I took it off :-) Does it require a special tool?? The clamp appears to be re-usable but I want to make sure that that it will still make a nice tight fit. #2 I also noticed that the outside of the internal carrier bearing (at the contact point of every internal marble sized pivot point bearing) has heat marks on the lip where the fat end of the CV boot seals. Is this common with 4wd quads? This is the first 4wd I have owned.

There is a tool to put the clamp on, or some people get away with a scew driver. I had to buy the tool. The cost ranges from $10 - $90, depending what you buy. I have bought a $10 and $20 tool. The $10 broke the first time I tried to use it, the $20 is still working fine.

quadman, where do I find the special pliers?

are they a piece that I can get from a "sears type" store or are they another money maker for my polaris dealer?

You might try auto parts they have some of that stuff you can borrow or rent. COB

I have used needle nose vise grips but nothing works like the right tool. $20. is about right for the one we got. The heat marks are part of the manufacturing process so dont worry. Those are very tough joints and should last a long time if the grease is clean
