sp 500 squeeks at low speed
#1
when I drive my sp 500 h.o. at 5 to 10 mph it sounds like there is a rock in the brakes or some thing like that when I speed up it goes away do you think that some thing is wrong with the brakes ? someone told me that the engine brake was sticking.I checked the brakes and didn't find anything.

I have the same problem on my 2000 SP500 with only 90 miles (20 hours) on it. If some sort of lubricant will help, please let me know where to apply it.
I doubt my pads are worn as most of my riding is smoother trails with minimal braking, but I will check the obvious also.

My '99 has done it since day 1. The sound comes and goes. Seems to be associated only with the rear brakes. Don't sweat it.

My 2000 SP500's brakes have sqeeked since the first 100 miles or so. It doesn't do it all the time but sometimes it is annoying.
If you'll put a little bit of brake fluid on the metal disc rotors it will stop the squeeks for a while.

I agree with some of the others that the squeak comes and goes on mine too. As far as the lube I have not done it, but have heard of some others doing it. I believe the put it on the rotors, for it being easier than putting it on the pads like we would on a car. Good luck

GUYS !!!! DON'T EVER PUT ANY LUBRICANTS OR BRAKE FLUID ON THE BRAKE ROTORS OR FRICTION SURFACE OF THE PADS !!!!!!!!!!!!!
The automotive "disc brake anti-squeal is applied to the bck of the brake pad.
Here's the drill:
Remove the brake caliper and the pads from the caliper.
Clean everything with "Brake Cleaner" ( NOT carb cleaner, it leaves a residue ).
Sand the pads lightly with some 150 grit sandpaper on a flat surface to clean them up. Note "LIGHTLY SAND". All you want to do is clean up the surface.
Spray the pads with the brake cleaner again, and apply the Disc Brake Anti-Squeal according to the directions on the package. This stuff goes on the backside of the pad.
Let it set up, and reassemble the brakes.
This has worked for me on my Scrambler, but occasionally you have to renew the anti squeal.
