99 Xplorer 400 Recoil Water Drain
#1
I was riding last saturday and just noticed that some water got in there and a little mud. What should I all due to drain it, i was looking for a bolt on the bottom to drain it but couldn't find it, i noticed there was a bunch of bolts going around the recoil case holding it on, should i just take off the bolts? or is there a easier way? also should i spray some water in there to get the mud out, kinda sticky. Also, is the drain bolt on the circler part more or the square part the recoil case is connected to. Also is it necessary to take off the skid plates to get to drain? thanks for the help.

There should be a bolt at the bottom of the case. It is one of the bigger ones facing straight down. My reference is my '96 SP400, so it should be similar. You will have to take off the skid plate on the bottom to get at it. While you are there, pull the other drain plugs like the starter plug, etc. You may want to call your dealer also for more info, that's how I found out.
BTW, if you got it wet pretty good, it will take awhile to dry out. When you pull the drain plug out, pull the recoil over a couple times and let it dry good. Repeat that until it is dry. I put the plug back in mine before and pulled it many times after and water still came out. It takes a bit of time. Not sure about the mud, but hopefully it's not much. If you don't get it dry, it will freeze up in the winter.
Hope this helps.
