H.O. overheats-help!!!
#1
I was out leveling driveway with my 500 H.O. and plow. Didn't notice the heat light come on, but could smell that it was getting hot. I stopped and the antifreeze was spraying out of the overflow bottle and could see the fan was just barely turning. Took the plow off and rode it to get some air moving through the radiator, the heat light went off and seemed to run fine. When I stopped again and turned the key back on, the fan started turning, but still just barely. Left it set for a few minutes and again started it and this time the fan was back to working "normally". Any thoughts as to why or what would cause this? This just happened-have not checked the radiator level yet to see how much liquid was lost. Any comments would be appreciated.

This just happened to my 6x6 recently. Open up your radiator cap and fill it back up to the top, then fill your overflow back up too, not all the way though. The cause of the fan not running properly was the small amount of coolant. The thermo works off of heat givin off by the coolant, and the fan runs off of the thermo. No coolant, no working thermo, no working fan. When the coolant is pushed out of the overflow bottle, that pretty much means a complete overheat. I snorkeled my overflow bottle incase this happened(whitch it did). Buy about 6 ft(just to be safe) of cant remember if its 1/4" or 3/8" vinyl hose, take the cap off of the overflow and buy a brass connector for 1/4" or 3/8" vinyl hose, drill a hole in the cap a little smaller than the connector and then push the connector in the hole you drilled in the cap. Attatch the vinyl hose to the connector in the cap and then run it along the side of your gas tank and up into the headlight pod. Now undo the headlight pod and put the vinyl hose down the steering stem. This way, if you ever happend to overheat, the coolant will just go up the tube and on the ground through the steering stem.

YOU PROBABLY DO HAVE A FAULTY FAN OR THERMO SWITCH. I DID SOMETHING SIMILAR TO 6X6'S SET UP EXCEPT I HAVE MY HOSE FOR THE OVERFLOW POINTING TO MY HEAD PIPE THIS WAY IF SHE OVER HEATS WHILE I AM BUSY WATCHING SOMETHING ELSE I CAN SMELL IT HIT THE EXHAUST AND SEE THE STEAM. I ALSO WIRED A SWITCH TO MY FAN SO THAT I CAN LEAVE IT RUN CONSTANTLY IF I AM DOING A LOT OF IDILING OR ALOT OF HEAVY WORK. THIS SEEMS TO HAVE BEEN VERY HELPFUL WITH THE COOLING PROBS BECAUSE SHE HAS NOT OVER HEATED SINCE.
