clutch buttons
#1
I was told that i should change mu buttons on my clutch, since it is fairly old, but do not knwo where they go? Do they go in the driven clutch or the drive clutch? Any help would be appreciated.
Another Question, are some replacement buttons better then others? Where can I get replacement buttons on the Internet?
thanks again
John

Try Starting Line Products (208) 529-0244, for your buttons, which are housed in the secondary clutch (the helix slides up/down on them). They have some polaris snowmobile replacements, Black Brute is the name of them, they should work in your ATV. $33.- for the set. Cheaper ones are available.

Usually the buttons that need replacing are the ones in the driven clutch aka secondary clutch. The buttons are what the helix slides on. If you take the driven clutch apart (it is two halves) and take the helix off (also called a ramp)you will see the little buttons that are in there. I don't remember what kind of screw head is on the screws that hold them on. I think they're torx. By the way, remember what hole the spring is in, there's 3 holes. This is a clutch setting and affects the performance of the clutch.

I just replaced mine, the agressive secondary spring in the clutch kit helped wear them out.
$33 is steap, even if they are top of the line. From the dealer, it would have cost $16. I ordered the set of 3 for a total of $5 from EPI.

Clutch buttons cost $1.50 each at my local Polaris dealer, and the "discount" price is only $1.21 because I purchased my ATV there. Photos of the driven clutch & ramp buttons are on my ATVMAINT web page.

Tim,
Thanks for taking the time to put your photos and advice up where it is available to everyone. You, Adam and the Polaris shop manual have saved me large dollars and significant time I would have otherwise spent searching for fittings and parts.
And thanks to all of you who share your experiences and tips to make our sport more enjoyable.

Allow me to put my 2 cents in by saying once you go roller clutch there is no going back. Say goodbye to buttons, PVT dust, Sliding friction and less than optimal performance.

I'm definitly considering a roller clutch setup for "sometime in the future". My '98 Sportsman doesn't have EBS, and I understand roller clutch will give me some engine braking as well as performance and reliability benefits. So far though, I haven't had any real problems with the stock setup and I don't have the $$ burning a hole in my pocket to go buy something that doesn't need to be replaced (yet). FYI, I do have over 1200 miles on it now; ride the mountains more than anything else, and still have the original brake pads. I do use low-range on steep descents, and try not to get too close behind slower atv's when going downhill .. it handles the rough stuff so well I just go faster than everybody else going downhill
and only use the brakes when I really need too.

Welcome back Tim! And if you ahve been around here for a while already, sorry for not noticing. :-) Great site, I know it's been up a while, but I still enjoy it.
I am seriously thinking about going roller. Chris, what helix do you have? Does it downshift fast & well enough when riding steep hills? I could buy a lot of buttons for the price of the roller setup, but I don't feel like changing them, plus with roller I would always be at optimum performance.
I swear my local dealer likes to rip people off. I was told that a lot of dealers sell them for around $2 a piece, and then I ordered at $1.50 a piece, and yall say your dealers sell them around $1-2 a piece, and my local wants $5.60 each! Things like this is why I don't buy accessories or quads from them, but for little parts, it's not worth driving too far. This is sad...
