Just put new rack pack on my 500 Scrambler. Its the Polaris black bag that is the same shape as the rack and about 8" deep. So far I've got:
Come along & tow strap wrapped in a pillow
12 pack can cooler
Extra Bungy cords
Tire plug kit
Mashete
Can huggers ('round here we call em coozies)
Wind breaker
.22 caliber pistol & ammo (never know)
Canteen & H20 purifier

Plan to add first aid kit & maybe small tool kit. Always carry extra masterlinks too.

What else? Any ideas?

Tire plug kit sounds good, but how will you fill the tire up again? :-) We have a little compressor that plugs into the accessory outlet on the quads, or in the car to fill tires. Works great.

How about a survival blanket. They are very small and you never know when you will need it (for you or other rider). A small flashlight might be a good idea. You never kknow when you will be using those tools at night.

In addition to many of the things you mentioned, I carry a hank of rope 50' and I also carry two twenyfive foot sections of 1/4" steel cable as "winch cable extensions" (just in case). I also carry a metal whistle on a leather string tied to the handle bars. (saw this in another post and thought it was a very clever idea) A low-tech communication device if you get separated from other members of your party (just make sure they have one too!) And/or may be much more effective than yelling in an emergency type situation because it generally can be heard for much greater distances and "draws attention" in a different way than yelling.
I am also in the process of building an ATV size {Pull-Pal), which is a device that acts an a winching post when nothing else is convient. And an elcheapo plastic poncho.
