Im seriously looking to make the best mudding quad and snow pushing quad around my town. I found a 1998 Explorer 400 4x4 with 1300 miles, a #1500 winch, a 4 foot blade, in great condition and shock boots (what the heck are those) all for $3500.00. That seems reasonable to me but that high of miles worries me. I know I have heared people talk about the brakes being junk, he says hes never changed them so it sounds like i would have to do that soon. Since its a two stroke am I going to havta rebuild it ever couple hundred of miles? That scared me a little too. Any other things I should look for when I go to look at it. Tell me if you think this thing wont be sweet. Put a 4 or 6 inch lift kit on it and add some 28 inch (or the biggest tires they make) on there. Maybe try and squeeze some 33 inch truck super swampers on there also!!!!!

Price can be evaluated by looking at KellyBlueBook.com. The acceseries are valuable if you need them (a plow would be worthless in Texas). As for the 2-stroke rebuilding every 200 or so miles, do not worry. I have a 1993 that just had it's first piston installed this last winter. They last if you keep the air filter clean and maintain the machine. I think you will be happy with the performance of the machine because they are really quick and powerful. My tw0-stroke has been great and I plan on buying an Xploer 400 for my next 4Wheeler.
Try to find out where it was ridden. Deep water and mud are harder on a maching than trail cruising. Nromally you can tell by the outside appearance of how the machine has been cared for.

I recently bought a `98 Xplorer. It is not nearly as nice as you make this one out to be. Mine has no winch or blade. It had 2500 miles on it when I bought it. I got it rebuilt and bored over, and its a hoss now! Lots of power, and I'm planning on adding a power kit for even more. I paid $3000 for mine, but I would pay the extra $500 for the stuff you're getting(winch & blade). I think its worth it, but hey, that's just my opinion, you should take someone w/you who knows alot about polaris's and two strokes to look it over w/you. Good luck. Lata.

TextIf that 98 Polaris 400 was in Wyoming and had those accessories (and was in excellent condition), than $3500 would be a good price. If it has been well taken care of than 1300 miles isnt bad. I have heard of Xplorer 400 engines lasting for alot more miles than that.
TextMy brother sold his 98 Xplorer 400 last year for $4400 and it happened to have 1300 miles on it also. He took very good care of it and maintained it very good. It looked like new when he sold it.
TextAnother example, I was looking at a 95 Xplorer 400 last fall. The guy had only 300 miles on it, and it was flawless. He was asking $3800. I really didnt want to spend that kind of money on something that was 5 years old at the time even though it was like new. Incidently, he sold it the same day he had it listed in the paper.
TextI ended up buying a 2000 Xplorer last fall (last years model - but brand new). I paid $5000 for it. Too me, I was willing to pay an extra $1000 + for something that was brand new, and I didnt have to worry about how it was ridden. And, it had the shaft drive to the front rather than chain driven like the 95 had.

I bought an explorer 400 last year from my father in law. He was in the process of trading it for a 500 sportsman. I gave him what the dealer was allowing him on trade $3300. I still had to pay tax so the total was 3500 it only had about 500 miles on it. I couldnt pass up the deal. I love the machine I cant imagine a 4x4 that is more fun to drive. I have no problem beating his non HO sportsman.
