Today while riding I hit a water-filled mud hole pretty fast and made a huge wave over my quad. Afterwards it started to sputter and back fire and did it for a long while. Could I have water mixed in with something?

Did you check your airbox? You probably just got the filter wet. If your airbox drained, it'll probably be just fine. It's unlikely that you hurt anything if the engine didn't die.
Check the airbox right away for water.

Bushhog, if the water cooled off the headpipe, that will make it run like crap. It goes from normal operating temperature to cold, and it is too drastic of a drop. That is probably all it is.

Bush,
two other possibilities, one is that you might have gotten water down around your sparkplug... that will cause it to either die or just start "banging out" really bad..
Another is that you got water inside the "pullcord" housing where your stator assembly and magnetic pulser are located, I would check the bottom drain for water on that and if you find water, take the cover off and seal it with a thin coat of RTV silicone and a new gasket.. After you get it back on, put some grease on the inside of the pullcord handle boot (where it contacts the housing) and seat it on there good, then put a hoseclamp on that bad boy and you're ready to go play submarine.
Good Luck...
