My POLARIS is Junk
#83
OK just kidding about the last post, though I will say that while every maker puts out a lemon now and then, Polaris seems to put about one a day off the line. I've been real lucky with mine (both of them damned near bulletproof) but I have seen some ridiculous parts failures on Popo's. Things that shouldn't have any reason to break. Things that look wore out after less than 100 miles of riding. Spotty to poor quality control is the only thing I can think. Manufacturing errors happen all the time. It's the QC dept's job to stop them from getting to the consumer.

just bought a 500 touring
I've only ridden it 20 miles but after reading this thread I'm almost afraid to drive it. Prior to buying it I asked 2 independent mechanics about Polaris and both advised to avoid Polaris. My sons have abused the heck out of my 2 Prairies and they just keep going. I won' allow them to touch my new Polaris.
Perusing through the owner's manual and I see a bunch of preventive maint stuff that I'm surely going to following, including the purchase of only Polaris fluids. The oil change seems quite involved, including the need to prime the system.

I've seen this thread lingering around from time to time, so what the hell. I'll share my story about my Polaris. I'm not bashing any make, just stating my experiences with off road vehicles. This may seem like apples and oranges too, but it's just my 2 cents. I bought myself and my wife 2 machines on the same day last year, from two different sellers. I got her a 95 Polaris 300 4x4, and myself an 02 yz250f. The Polaris had just had a professional top and bottom end rebuild done to it, a brand new battery, belt, primary clutch, and a spankin' new cooling fan. The Yamaha was purchased from a teenager. He said he changed the oil and did all of the typical PM work to it. He also said that the motor has never been rebuilt or opened up at all. It did have numbers on it, so I assume that he did race it. The Polaris is my wife's first atv. Since she is new to it, it was babied. The Yamaha on the other hand...lol, was beaten HEINOUSLY. I ride the **** out of the bike. I roost it every chance I get. I jump the bike, and also cross creeks and go through mud very often. As it stands right now, the Polaris is in my garage ripped apart with multiple problems ranging from battery charging issues to running issues. I put in a starter (that was fun), another cooling fan, and I'm getting ready to put in crank seals and possibly another top end. The Yamaha will start on the first kick and run like a raped ape. The only thing that i needed to do to it since I bought it was put air in the rear tire. Both vehicles were maintained properly (fresh fluids, chains adjusted, air filters cleaned, bikes washed and greased up) and stored indoors. I'm very **** about maintenance on everything I own. It was very disappointing to take such good care of the quad and still have so many problems. Like I said, I'm not bashing Polaris, just stating my own personal experiences. When the quad runs good we both love it. It goes just about anywhere you point the tires, when it's running of course. Maybe after all the problems are addressed, we can have a problem free season next year. My fingers are crossed.

I hate to say it but I gave polaris a chance despite warnings and I am regretting it everyday.I work on it costintly.1300 miles on it and everything is wore out.I have a yamaha, suzuki and a honda and each one has its quircks but no matter what they run and have twice the miles.Im fixing mine and selling it.It will be missed because when it runs its sweeet.I think Im going to give that new rhino or razor clone a try next, cant be any worse of than I am now.good luck with every ones popo and thanks for some of the help on this forum. Also I was just noticing that all the other brands have ?s about there older stuff and every polaris site I go to there are dozens of threads that start with <wont start> <4wheel drive issues>.makes you think

A prime example of this would be the PVT,polaris was notorious for its PVT and the problems it had(belts slipping, excessive belt wear, poor waterproofing,no engine braking). So when kawasaki introduced their auto,it was sealed against water better,it was smoother, and belt life was alot better. Then yamaha introduced auto's and offered engine braking, better waterproofing and a drain so you get water out, and they also offered a system that provided constant belt tension(AC also offers this)which resulted in far better belt life.
I've got an 03 trailblazer 400 that has the original belt on it... I run mine ATLEAST 10 hours a week(more when I ride all weekend) it doesn't matter if I'm riding through a creek while i'm riding the trails or playing in the mud down by the lake I have NEVER had my belt slip from water ingestion in the belt casing. If you got one of those "1 in 100" or "1 in 50" Polaris's that were built just a little bit different from the other's I'm sorry and I feel your pain, but I wouldn't take it out on the entire brand... I know that most people that own polaris will put you down for having problems with yours, I'm not going to do that because I've had problems with other brands too... it's just that I personally know several people that have had nothing but praises to sing about polaris and I've enjoyed mine for the last 2 years, but if you got a "bad" one then I think that's just exactly what happend... you just happend to get a badly built one(atleast 1 in 50 i'm sure)
