CV boot replacement on scram 500 4X4
#1
Can I replace it myself?I consider myself somewhat mechanicly inclined(I do my own fluid changes,tune-ups).Do I need any special tools?Should I let dealer do it?Any advice would be helpful?Service manual a must? THANKS

Its an easy change. I do recommend a manual though. Had to replace mine three times before I figured out you shouldn't ride in clear cuts in the woods. Am working on making a-arm guards from light weight aluminum. Good luck.

It isn't that tough. Take the clamps off the old boots, and take apart the lower ball joint (have the front skidplate on blocks or a jack before you do this). The axle is held into the CV joint by a spring clip. They simply pull apart with a 'pop'. Grease it up (grease may be provided with the new boot, if not get some CV grease at an auto parts store) and put everything back together like it was, being absolutely sure the spring clip on the end of the axle locks into place (usually you will hear it go 'click'). Re-assemble the ball joint, and clamp the boot down good. You are now ready to roll.
A torque wrench is recommended for tightening the ball joint, and CV clamp pliers are HIGHLY recommended.
A service manual is helpful, but in all honesty, the listing in the parts manual you can download from the Polaris website shows how everything fits together and may be enough for this project.

Sure you can. The service manual only convers the basics. I only got so much out of the manual and the rest I had to go on intuition. Best advice is if your not confident then pay someone else to bust up their knuckles!
