polaris clutch question
#1
My wifes 1995 Trail Boss runs really well, plenty of power on the trails, but when we went to the dunes it does good on small dunes but it poops out on the big ones. It seems like the clutch is working overtime it loses wheel speed which is very important in the sand. it is keeping the engine rpms up real good it is not even trying to dog the engine at all, but the wheels are barely turning. What would work to keep the wheel speed up and put alittle more pull on the engine? or would that not be wise? Thanks, David

David, let me know when you find out. My 00 500 Sportsman dogs on steep hills, seems that the engine reaches a certain rpm and then never goes any higher. I'm certain the engine could rev a little higher. Feels as though the clutch weights are a little heavy and actuate too soon before quad speed is built up. I've been wondering where I can find a clutch expert to show me how to modify my clutch so that I can improve performance. Had a lot of fun playing with older Comet clutches on free-air ski-doos, but I'm afraid to open up my new baby.

well, from what i know, there are a couple of places you can call, and they will be able to tell you exactly what the do to your clutch to get what you want out of your quad. from what i read i hear ritter cycle is one of the best to deal with. http://rittercycle.com/polaris.htm another is hpd http://www.hpd-inc.com/index.html i know there are lighter flywheel weights that will let your engine rev higher and shift differently. i'm not real familiar with the modifications, but i know you can tune your clutch exactly to your riding needs. might want to think about a pipe too if you have the money. ritter has a kit that gives you the pipe, air filter, clutch kit, and jet kit for $325.00 i hear that it will bring the trail blazer up near "stock" 400 power.

I would try Erlandson (EPI), they are in Brainerd, MN and work closely with Polaris. My Polaris sled really came alive with one of their kits. If they do atv's, anything like the sleds you'll be happy. For sleds, they don't just do kits, they recommend weights, springs, and helixes for what you want out of your clutch. Their number is 218-829-6036.
