sounds like your mixture screw is out of ajustment, for hot weather riding it should be 1 1/2 turns out from seat, this will vary depending on how much above sea level you are.

I'm no pro, but it sounds like your buddy is heading down the same road that I did last year. I have a 2000 Scram 4x4 and I bought the HSP performance kit from Hot Seat as well. Now that he's gotten into performance parts, I'd suggest an EGT (engine gas temp) gauge. They're a bit pricey, but having one could save him a lot of damage to his new machine. I think Hot Seat sells these as well, the digital ones are a bit more expensive (over $300)then the analog gauges, but I've heard they're well worth it. The analog meter style gauges work as well, I think for either one you have to buy the probe separate and for the analog gauge, you have to buy the mounting case separate as well (I don't know why the hell they just don't put it all together and make it easier on everyone!). I had the same problem your buddy is having when I first put the HSP kit on my machine. I had to change my pilot jet, depending on which K/N filter I had on the machine. If I had the airbox on it, I used a #30 and with the K/N filter charger on it, I used a #40. BUT! Don't take my word for it, I live at around 2000 feet in elevation and operate my machine between 70 and 80 degrees. All this makes a difference, I would again highly suggest that your friend get an EGT, that way he'll know he's in the right operating temperature range, because operating at to high of a temperature range can easily seize up the piston (now that would be costly!).

Wish your friend luck for me. I have to be honest with you, I wish I would have left my Scrammy stock and just skipped the performance parts. I guess I have a biased opinion though, since she's sittin' in the garage right now with the transmission in pieces! I can't help but think that the extra strain of the higher RPM operation that the Hypershift Clutch Kit provides didn't have something to do with my tranny problems. Mine acted that way when I changed the carb, I had to move the clip on the needle of the carb all the way to the top I believe (top or bottom one of them). That cleared it up for me. Something you might try and it doesn't cost $$ either.
