What are the main things to check on a 2000 used Polaris Scrambler 500 4x4 before buying?

Take a close look at things, although it is easy to disguise, look at the air filter, if he changed it or cleaned it recently of course you won't be able to tell, but if it is really filthy there is a sign of maintence or lack of. look inside the filter box. Be sure to check the crankcase for cracks or repairs, and look at wear on the sprockets. I'm sure others on here can give you alot better pointers, but those are a start.

Things to look for on a Polaris 2000 Scrambler 500
1. Check the obvious for signs of abuse and or lack of maintenance.
2. Check the steering for looseness. If the steering is loose, ask if the lower bushing has been changed. If not, its a $35 fix and takes about an hour.
3. Check the brake pads and rotors. The 2000 came with soft pads that wear really quickly and rotor damage occurs if they were rode after being wore out. If they are stock, they probably need replaced.
4. Check the chain and gearcase. If the machine has been jumped hard, the chain my have broke and may have been replaced. Also, look for any holes in the gearcase that may have been patched/repaired as a result of the chain breaking.
5. Check the front hubs (if 4x4) and see if they have enough oil in them and that the oil does not look milky (indicating water has entered).
Hope this helps.
