Is Polaris Detuning Performance?
#11
Hey Chris -
The 40mm carb from your Scram 500 is on the SP500 and doing very well. We will need to get another needle one step leaner than the one in it now since we are on the last clip, but boy it runs good. Just hat to be stuck on the last clip with no adjustment, so we're getting another. I took some tach readings "before" changing the carb over and as soon as the snow is gone we'll do some comparison runs. The main is the same on top as your Scram @ 160. All the plug readings look good. It fitted up beatifully to the stock SP500 airbox. The only thing we will have to do is fabricate a support cross strap a little different than the one that was on there. This carb is really huge in overall size compared to the little 34 pooper. The needle is about 3/4" longer. When they are next to each other looks like a 4-bbl to a deuce.
We are getting tremendous flow thru the motor now and it's very noticeable, but we have just got a foot of snow, so it's tough to tell. But, I got it going 45 up my hill on hardpack snow "with the plow on" tonight. That's quite unbelieveable. I used to have a tough time going 45 up the hill with no plow. It's got real good grunt, in fact the low end feels better than ever before. So much for the big carb low end theory, huh.
Also, we went to IDS2 last Friday and I'll tell you what, it perked it right up. The wall that was there at 35-40 got a lot smaller.
Soon as the snow goes away a little ( fat chance, another foot is coming tomorrow) I'll test it a bit. Right now its plowing snow again just fine, but with a lot more authority. My wife seldom comments, but tonight when taking the dog out said, "boy, that thing sounds like a monster, what did you do to it? It looks like you are pushing the snow around easier for some reason."
Rarely will she say much about my quads, but it is noticeable, even with the snow.
I'll report back . . .
