I have a Blaster currnetly, and am thinking about getting another quad. How good is a scrambler 400 4x4 compared to a 400 ex for pit riding and trail riding? Does the scrambler jump good? How is the suspension for trail riding? Are they reliable? Thanks

I own a 99 sc 400 4x4 and love riding it! almost all of my riding is on trails and it is a blast! we went riding just yesterday (saturday) on some of the desert trails near here and had a hell of a good time. the AWD works wonders if you get into mud or snow and still handles like a two-wheeler. we found a cool jump neer the bottom of a small hill. the jump was a nice rounded pile of dirt about 5ft tall and was prefect for jumping off. when going down the hill and off the jump there was a slight downhill slope to land on, i wish i could have stayed there all day and played!

In my area of PA, the Poconos, I ride with a Banshee. He's very good on the straight hills, but when negotiating turns, veering around rocks or when there is a shortstart/no room to get a running start, he's toast.

The Scrambler can start with no start and be doing 15-20 by a little ways up the hill! If I have to go around things in mid hill, I can, he cant.

His suspension is good, but he's got several fewer inches.

I like to ride in the woods and mountains and 400ex's usually stay home where they can't get banged up. In the more open and smooth trails the 400ex is the perfered machine for most people.

As far as features you get more for your money with the scramblers ( 4wd, liquid cooled, back up recoil..etc ). I can't be bothered with shifting so i am happy with the PVT system.

snapper,

the awd makes a huge difference in hill climbing. i live in pa, nad we have tons of coal dumps around here. the hills are incredible, some even too steep to walk up if you had to. the awd is awesome on hills. without it, the scrambler is almost helpless because of its weight. i saw a guy with a 4x2 and he didn't like it because it wouldn't climd very good. don't get me wrong, it has plenty of power in 2 wheel, but if you are into climbing miniature mountains, you will need the awd. the only thing is hang on when climbing steep hills. when the front wheels grab, it can throw you around alittle. the only thing that still climbs alittle better is a banshee. those things are just unstopable on hill climbs. although i would have to say with a few mods, i think the scrambler will compare. you can't get a better quad if you are looking for an all around best quad. trails, hills, snow, mud, rocky terrain...it loves it all.

I ride with a Banshee seomtimes. He is faster up the hills, where he can get momentum and/or traction. Most of the time, he makes it, but he hardly ever gets traction. So sometimes I can climb father/faster than him. If the Banshee has the traction, it will climb better. But without momentum, it usualy won't get traction. Plus the hard hit can make it wheelie easy. So overall, I would say the Scrambler is a better climber.
