broken wrist- decompression valve?
#1
well,
I have a bad battery on my scrambler, and instead of replacing it right away i have been pull starting it. i was surprised how easy it was to start up untill today. I made for sure I got it right past the compression stroke before i gave it a good pull, but i guess i wasn't carefull enough. SNAP, broken right wrist, im 18 and this is the first bone i have ever broken, hopefully the last. doc says i will be wearing a cast six weeks and i need to sell the wheeler cause its dangerous. i told him i still got one good arm so becarefull what you say.
anyhow, this brings me up to the question, is this machine (98 500 scrambler) set up with an automaatic decompression valve, and does it apply when pull starting?
Don't be suprised if I am posting a message in a week asking how to relocate the throttle to the left side. Geeze that was just going to be a joke but now that i think about it.............6 weeks is a long time.

Sorry about your ordeal. Ironically, I nearly did the same thing yesterday, with my Xplorer 400. I was "demonstrating," to my wife, how you can start the quad with the pull cord.
Like you, I slowly pulled the cord until I thought it was at the point of compression--or compression release, if you will. After giving a good tug, SNAP! The cord was violently ripped out of my hand. Instant pain. I was certain I broke a few fingers, as I couldn't move them. Fortunately, I slowly regained feeling in my fingers, but they still hurt, even today.
I also have a SP 500, I wonder how hard that would be to pull start? (After my Xplorer "incident" I wasn't about to try it again on the SP.)

I have used the pull start on my sportsman 500 a couple of times just to see if it would and didn't have any trouble. When I was test driving it I asked about a funny little noise the engine was making and the dealer said it was the automatic compression release and he said they all do it.
