Question: Removing Carb on SP500
#1
I have a question regarding changing jets on my SP500. When turning to get to the underside of my SP500 carb to change jets I am faced with the deliema of whether or not to disconnect the throttle cable from the carb...
Does everyone disconnect the throttle cable when getting to the underside of their SP500 carbs to change jets? Are there any secrets to removing the four screws and disconnecting the cable that might help me given the awkward positioning of the screens and in disconnecting this cable?
Thanks in advance!

I also have a similiar situation with stripped screw heads. What process did you go through to replace the screws? You mentioned cutting the heads off, but then what did you do?
Also, did disconnecting the throttle cable give you any problems? Did you use any sort of special screw drivers given the awkward, vertical position of the 4 screws holding the cover to the throttle cable?
Thanks! Sounds like you've already been down the road I'm now going with this situation....

Use a new # 2 philips to remove the screws, if that fails use an impact driver. Then trot on down to your neighborhood Ace Hardware and pick up four new stainless steel screws and your stripping problems are over.
While you are there don't forget to pick up the proper sized Allen wrench to be used for draining the carburetor bowl in the case of bad fuel or contaminats.

I have been able to remove the float bowl by loosening the clamps on the boot and the inlet tube. I then rotate the carb to the side, and use a long #2 phillips screwdriver. If you remove the side pannel you should be able to access the floatbowl. You may have to tap on the end of the screwdriver to loosen the screws before you try turning them.
Remember to check the cable adjustment on the electronic throttle control switch any time you pull or stretch the throttle cable. Good Luck.

If I remember correctly I was able to remove 2 of the screws with vice grips and the remaining two I cut off with a hacksaw. Once the heads are off I slid the float bowl off then removed the screws with vice grips. I replaced my original screws with stainless steel so should last for a long time. Unfortunately I cannot remember how I disconnected the throttle cable but I do know it is not difficult.
