You asked the question on the Polaris board and the scrambler is going to win. Ask the same question on the Yahama board and I would bet the Wolverine would win. Then ask the same question on the Honda board and they would both be junk. (lol) Really though, I rode a scrambler last night for about an hour, they do have alot of power, and a sporty feel. But they also feel very heavy compared to my Wolverine. Some one said that the stiff ride will wear you out on the Wolv, but the weight of the Scram will do the same thing. The wolv can be used for alot more work than the scram, and from past exsperence, will pull alot more/better. (If the scram had a low range it would be the other way.) The true four wheel drive stuff got old last year. Its nice but don't let it fool you into thinking it does better than anything else!! I have rode alot with a 500 scram, and in the mud, when he gets stuck I can usually drive around him and pull him right out. The scram just sits a little to low. (I think taller tires would make a huge difference.) One thing I don't like about the scram is how wide the motor/tranny is. I'm 5'9" and the way I have to stand on the scram is very uncomfrontable. Both are very nice machines, but if you think a little work will need to be done with it, I would pick the Wolverine. If mostly play will be done, I would pick the Scrambler.[img]i/expressions/face-icon-small-smile.gif[/img]

 

Thanks for all the replies. In regaurds to the plow thing I don't want just a utility quad. I want a dual purpose, leaning more to the sport aspect of it. That is why I picked these two quads. The engine in the scrambler is the same as the sportsman. How does the sportsman do in plowing snow? Or do you have to plow in low range all the time?

I would go with the wolverine it's great for sporty trail riding. I've ridden both and like the Wolverine better. Warn industries makes a 4x2 select system that makes the Wolverine go both 2x4 and 4x4.

 

i have an 98 sp500 and a 01 sp500 h.o. currently.

I owned a polaris tb250 before that.. I can tell u with
certainty that u never should under any circumstance
plow, haul, or do any heavy farmwork with either
sportsman in high gear.. always do this in low gear or
you'll surely smoke the belt.

I wouldn't think of plowing with a tb 250 or any polaris
that doesn't have a low range.

Even steep hills and heavy mudding should be done
in low gear on the sportsman.

The scrammy is geared differently than the sportsman
but it is not made for farm work .. it is a sport bike..that is
why it doesn't have a hi and lo range transmission..

Any Polaris atv with hi and lo range can be used for dual purpose.
Any Polaris atv with only one forward range should be used for
sport riding (imho).

If you buy the scrammy for dual purpose, you'll be dissappointed,
otherwise, i think it's great for what it's intended for.... sport riding...

 

A little over a year ago, I got rid of my Wolverine for a Scrambler. The Wolverine rides nice, handles nice, and gets great traction with full-time 4WD. But, the motor really lacks power. For plowing, the Wolverine probably won't do to well because the motor lacks power and first gear isn't that low. Also, my Wolverine didn't shift smoothly with the auto clutch and it is a real paint in the butt to get in to reverse. In fact, I sold it to my Dad and I have to help him put it in reverse alot when we're out riding.

The Scrambler is everything the wolverine is, only better. The brakes on the Scrambler are good, but sometimes I wish it had one lever. The automatic is awesome, I'll never go back to a manual tranny quad. The motor (I have the 400 2 stroke) is unbelievable. It has alot of power. I test rode a 500 and that motor seemed to be great too. Alot of low end torque which is what you need for plowing. I love to be able to switch between 4x2 and 4x4. I'm in 4x2 90% of the time and with the Scramblers chain drive rear, it's basically like riding a full sport quad. In my experience, the Scrambler is the hands-down winner.

 

it's not the power of the engine that's the problem for
plowing.. it's the fact there is no low gear... you'll
smoke belts if u do this much...

These machines are not made for utility... but are
great fun for what they are... "a great sport atv"...

First of all, notice my name. That's what I had up until last month. I traded my 2003 Wolverine in on a new 2001 Scrambler 500 4x4. I have to agree with Matt's post above, the Scrambler is better in every way.

I haven't been on a Quad since the first Suzuki 250s came out a bazillion years ago and I sucked on those things. The reason I got the Wolverine is because I wanted a Warrior because I like sport machines, not utility machines. The Wolverine was similar in size, motor, weight, and I liked that fact I would have 4WD because I knew I would be riding with guys with utility machines. The Wolverine was a couple hundred bucks more so I thought it would be a safe buy.

I have to say, my friends with Polaris Sportsman 500s were spanking me. I really had to work to keep up with them on trail, shifting sucked because I did it all the time..shift shift shift. The Wolverine really steers heavy and wide because the fulltime 4WD. Can't wheelie, do donuts, slide the *** in a turn. It just doesn't seem as fun to ride. Also, trying to keep up with a machine with a CVT at 50 mph can wear you out on the Wolverine because the engine is just screaming.

The Wolverine is a nice beginner ATV and can do a lot. Gets great gas mileage, has shaft drive, is light weight! But I think you'll outgrow it after a couple rides. Now if it had a CVT or even a manual clutch, a 500cc engine, and 2WD/4WD for under $6K, I would say that would be a better deal. Wait, it's sounding like a Scrambler now!
