Hello.

I posted a question in a former week, but again, I will introduce myself:

I am in Austria, and yesterday I bought a Polaris Sportsman. I am absolutely unexperienced in riding ATVs so I d like to get an answer to the following question:

I will use my ATV to carry material to my montain cabin as well than for mowing the grass up there. There are extremely steep hills where I need to cut the grass 2 times a season. So, in case I mount a mower to the front (or back) to my ATV, I have to go uphill and must turn the ATV around on the top of the hill to go downhill again. Up and down - up and down again..... The place where I can turn the ATV around is a very steep 35 - 40 degree slope, so I am afraid that I will flip the ATV over while turning around.

Does anybody have an idea if the ATV will flip over when U-turning on that 40 degree slope?

Is there an accessory available (like double-wheels at the rear for example) or a balancing bar or anything else which may be able to protect the ATV from flipping over?

Well, english isnt my mothertongue and my language skills are kinda rusty, so I hope that you guys understand what I mean.

Glad to get any advise....

Best Regards from the Alps

I can't really tell you with out being there, and seeing the terrain, etc. If you have a front mount mower, it *may* help stability. Also, if there is a flat spot at the top, it would be easier. If you are worried about flipping, you may want to carry a Come-A-Long, assuming there are nearby trees. A winch is good, but if you're on your side, its more work to rig the winch up, then to just attach the comealong to a floor board bracket and tree.

I would say that if it dosent over turn you will have a major PUCKER FACTOR going on In inglish that means OH SHI$. You would be better of to leave the mower mounted on the rear and back down the slope. Much safer And it is garaunteed to work.

Maybe mount the mower up front. Then, you could go up the hill in forward (easier to use more throttle power in 4WD forward since you won't have to keep the override button pushed). Once at the top, use the brakes and let the machine and mower roll back down the hill slowly. Maybe eliminating the need to turn around. The front mower would probably be enough but, possibly placing sand bags, for more weight, on the front rack will help too.

Svalbard, an atv will flip over. What you are talking about sound very dangerous. If the atv does flip, the mower blades will be exposed and spinning. When the atv flips back on its wheels, the mower could land anywhere including on you. But if you cannot do it the ways already mentioned and must turn around, I would get 2 tires on all 4 corners and make them the lowest profile you can find. I would also place weights on the atv on the uphill side of the turn and turn the same way each time. Anything to lower the center of gravity and move it to the uphill side.

PS your english is much beter than many of the people here. Some posts are absolutly unreadable.

Thanks guys. Well, the hill is approx. 300 feet long and the way of a possible crash down the hill is approx. 2400 feet , but then I will land soft in some small pine trees ;-)

I thought about the way to attach additional weels, but over here there are almost no accessories available. It is even hard to find a dealer and once found you must order your ATV from a picture in a catalog because they do not have any ATVs in stock. Its a real mess.

About the spinning blades in case of a turn-over:
I thought about that problem and would try to build a kinda "dead-man-key" which stops the blades within 1 second in case I remove my hand from the grip .

Does anybody know about the soft blades which are just a piece of nylon which is spinning around? Is it available for a large ATV-mower?

Well, if you guys could figure out the page where I can get the double wheel kit, that would be great!

At which angle does a ATV flip over ? any experience? Is it 30 degrees or 40 ? A common offroad truck has all 4 wheels on the ground until 45 degrees. I have seen that in TV, but I would never figure out that game with my truck - of course. ;-)

So, if you guys would be able to find out a solution for my problem, that would be absolutely great.

I thought about to build a balancing bar where a heavy weight slides from on end to the other. It could be steered by an electronic level. The weight could slides 3 feet to the left and to the right. I am sure that would work, but it creates another problem when mowing around trees and rocks because the bar makes the ATV 10 feet wide.....

Any ideas?
