WHATS THE BEST PERFORMANCE MODS FOR A SCRAMBLER 500 4 STROKE???
#11
If you want a sporty 4-stroke 4WD, the Scrambler is the only answer. As far as the Raptor goes, when they can lock in the front wheels I'll buy one. The 650 Prairie and 660 Grizzly may be fast, but they still look and feel like utilities. I've got around $700 and a lot of time tuning in my SC500 and I guarantee its more than a match for the Kawi or the Yamaha and its a lot sportier.
Whoever spent $650 for a clutch kit and installation got completely robbed.

Kevin, Brutus has a Scrambler X which is a 2x4 thats why he was comparing it to the raptor. Jack is right on getting hp out of a 4stroke, takes alot of money with little result. And with the price of a Scram X at $5600-$5900 depending on dealer, you could be up over $7000 before you know it for a 550lb Scam. that will still get beat by a 400ex or Raptor for alot less money.

Kevin,
No, I did not get robbed. I had to completely rebuild my clutch because I fragged it bad.
The drive clutch cost $281
Clutch kit was $170
New Belt $35
new buttons and seal $9
Labor $125
Tax $37
Total $663.45
I am completely satisfied with the job they did and my Scrambler runs great now and have no further problems.
As for Jack stating that there is nothing printed which shows marked improvement by installing the clutch kit.....He is right that it does raise the engagement point some. But in simple mans terms - the front end would never come off the ground before and now you had better hang on when you punch it cause it will wheelie on you. Way more than I expected.

If its a 2x4 then I would agree with Jack about buying something else, unless you really wanted the automatic bad. I have a 400SC and a 500SC and I know what it takes to get each one to run well. The 500 even when stock has plenty of torque and it doesn't take that much to make one faster than a 400ex.
My mistake Scott, your post made it sound like all they did was install a clutch kit.

Hey guys~
The best advice given so far is what Jack has been preaching. Polaris is WAY behind in the performance market that it's not even funny anymore! Your best bet for gaining performance is a different machine than the Polaris 500! I just bought a 2001 DS 650 for $5500 OTD and I guarantee its performance is untouchable by any Polaris of the same value! For the price of that ScramblerX, I could even add a few mods to my DS to further improve it over the Polaris! Just like KevinM said, unless you are totally hooked on the automatic clutch, you are wasting your time and money on the ScramblerX.

Brutus, Talk to HPD some more and see if your comfortable with installing the mods yourself, If so dont worry about jetting and installing the clutch kit, If you have some basic tools and mechanical knowledge and most importantly some paitence you can get your bike dialed in fairly easy, The pipe is a given and I reccomend going with the clutch kit at the same time,The air box mod is not all that critical you would probably be better served with a K&N or a uni filter, I like to get wet at times and dont want to take a chance on dumping a few gallons down the carb Re- jetting is no big deal after a few plug checks and the spec sheet HPD will send with their instructions will get pretty close from the start. You wont get 2 stroke power with out mega bucks but you will notice a difference over the stocker, My friends 500 has most of the HPD mods listed above and feels much better than it did stock, Its not as fast as my 400 but equally a thrilling ride

I'm going to agree with Jack. He knows what he is talking about. The 400 Scramblers are totally superior to the 500 in just about every way that counts where performance is concerned. If you are really serious about running with the "big boys", don't put a lot of miles on your Scrambler X 500 and trade it in on the Scrambler X 400 model.
Scott, welcome back! Long time no see!

Scott,
We were up your way at Susquehannock several weeks ago. Nice trip! 3 1/2 hours up, three hours to ride, and 3 1/2 hours back. We had fun though. Celeste and I are planning on going to Sproul sometime next weekend (not this weekend). Hope to see you there.

I'm new to this forum and don't want to start any problems but I have a problem with the above quote. I have a 1999 Scrambler 500 4x4 that is completely stock. I don't have a problem bringing the front wheels off the ground. I can do this on level ground from a dead stop and sitting flat on the center of the seat. As a matter of fact, it has came completely over on me before! Have I got a special Scrambler or is this normal?
Thanks
Scott
