Which quad is right to turn into a "Mudmonster"?

Since you are in the Polaris forum, and I know more about Polaris than most other brands (other than maybe Honda) I will give my recommendations for these brands only, other makes will likely have good choices also.
Polaris Sportsman HO if left stock other than bigger tires. Needs no front locker, and really no lift kit. Great ground clearance, but is a bit heavy. The 700 may be a choice, too, but are unproven, and hard to get.
If you are willing to do a few mods, I would go with an Xplorer 400. Lighter than most 4x4s, and has Low range, which the Scramblers don't, an advantage when turning bigger tires. Where they really come alive is when you add a few engine mods. A pipe & porting will up your horsepower to amazing levels. So much so that you may have to be careful where you peg the throttle as you may start to break driveline components. However, if you limit your mods to just what is necessary, they usually hold up OK. As a bonus, the Xplorers are enough cheaper than the new big bores, you can afford to mod them somewhat. For less money, you can have more power than the Prarie 650 or Grizzly 660. Yes, there are compromises here, like chain final drive instead of shaft, but if your goal is just getting through, a modded Xplorer is awfully hard to beat.
