Stock they have about the same straight line performance and top speed.
However, the 400 is significantly lighter, so it is easier to handle. If you are one to leave things all stock, the 500 may be the better way to go, but after a while, if you want more speed, the 400 is MUCH easier to get to go FAST. It will still be heavier than 'sport' quads, so it will not out-maneuver them, and don't even think about doing double jumps with one, but for straight-line acceleration, they can be real scorchers.
In short - 400 lighter, easier to modify
500 - heavier, but has a more durable 4 cycle engine.

The 500 is a nice bike in stock form, If you and your son plan on any mods though do yourself a favor and go with the 400, The 2 stroke is alot easier to modify period, To get the same results out of the 4 stroke would be about 4 times the investment, I ride with two 500 and both are very capable bikes hands down, Its just the old 2 vs 4 story, Either way im sure you both will be happy

I agree as well, get the 400 cause eventually your boy is going to want to go faster. Stock for stock they are about the same speed wise, but once you get into mods the 400 will give you alot more performance for the money.
If you know for sure you are going to leave it stock, maybe the 500 would be better since it's a 4-stroke, but that's not always 100% true either.
Check out that quad that you mentioned and if it is in good condition all around I think it would be well worth the $3500. I say go for it.

If you go with 4X4 on either bike you gain a little weight and its weight on the front wheels. There is a world of difference between a 400 2X4 and a 500 4X4 when it comes to steering and entering a fast tight corner. On the 2X4 you can get up on the bars, nail it and roost through the corner. On the 500 4X4 you grab lots of brakes, plow the front wheels and sfinkter pucker your way through the same corner (From experience)
Other than that it has all been covered.
400 Scrambler plus $500 kit will give you a very fast and fun toy.
500 Scrambler is quieter, smoother at low speeds(4-stroke), and still a fun fast toy.
If it was for my son only, I might even go with the 500.

The 400 is the easiest to get big power gains for the least cash outlay. An RCR Stage 1 kits is well under $ 400.00 and the difference is night & day. A topend rebuild on a 400 is less than $ 250.00 if you spin your own wrenches.
