Sportsman 400 4-stroke as fast as a 400 2-stroke?
#4
If both motors are completely stock, the 400 2-Stroke will make about 8-10 horse more than the 400 4-Stroke. If they both run the same top speed, then the 2 stroke is in desperate need of a taller front sproket.
The manufacturers do overgear some quads a little, just to keep them slowed down. 70 MPH on any quad is scary fast. The tires on these things are not designed for that, and they get real unstable at that speed. Throw in a 4X4s awkward chassis and its that much worse.

I doubt it because my friends 500 Magnum is a fair ammount slower than my friends Warrior, and the Warriors run at about 59-60mph. My Sport runs about 3-4mph faster than the Warrior (estimated).
However, if the 400 4-stroke Sportsman is faster than the 500 magnum then it's possible.

I have both a 400 2 stroke Sportsman and a 425 magnum(which is the same engine as the new 400 sportsman)and the 400 2 stroke will smoke the 425 in speed and power but it is not as trail friendly as the 425.400 has too much raw power for tech trails but is GREAT in the mud. This is interesting so far.FTWFLH, what would be the weight difference of these two machines? I know that between my 97 Sportsman and a 2001 Sportsman there is close to 100 lbs between the two. Anyway I don't doubt the 2 stroke to be much faster, but I still have doubts about the 4 stroke being able to keep up with a 2 stroke. Remember we're comparing 400's here and not 500 etc... Not sure how that Warrior (above post) can have anything to do with my question, do they also have a 400 cc engine?

I said that for comparison purposes.
In an earlier post you said that a guy said that his 400 4-stroke would run 59-60mph. A friend of mine has a 500 4-stroke and my Buddies Warrior will smoke it from start to finish. The Warrior tops out at 59-60mph, so what I'm saying is that if the 500 4-stroke is faster than the 400 4-stroke (which sounds logical) then I don't think that the 400 is running near 60mph.
See what I mean know?
