I was just wondering what you guys do if you break a cv joint in the middle of a long ride......just ride it with hit jerking and popping?

When mine broke, we pulled it out, and drove on. Only three wheel drive though. If you carry enough tools it isn't that hard to do.

DJ425,

When pulling it on the trail, do you just knock the roll pin out, and pull the shaft off from the front gearbox, or do you also have to undo the a-arm to get enough room to get the joint out? Thanks. Also, are there any tricks you've found to removing the roll pin or any other tricks about any of it?

When i break a cv joint out on the trail i just remove the shaft and leave the rest of it in the hub. The best way and easiest way i have found to get the roll pin out is to rotate the shaft until you can see it's level with the bike. You should be able to see it through the hole in the bottom corner of the bash plate. I just take a long phillips screwdriver and hit it with a hammer. I keep tapping it and it pops right out. It's very simple and takes about 5 minutes.

Thanks for the replies.

There's a place in my hometown that rebuilds the joints to be heavy-duty, and they warrant their internals for life, and used to warrant the whole joint.......but they told me that they have had some joints come back with the housing busted........not the internals. Therefore, they only warrant the guts.

They take your joint (shaft and all), and do some machining of the housing and all to accept a beefier cage, knuckle, and *****. They put it all back together and put a plastic-style boot back on that is supposed to be much more durable than the rubber ones. All that for $200 per side.

I want to go this route, but not before I break the stockers......not that they're gonna break, but you know what I mean.

Every year, there's a 17-mile ride in a swamp that I attend, and I posted this topic to see what to do if I'm at milemarker 10 and break one. Anyway, thanks again for the replies.
