Help!!!! What are these and do I need to worry about it? I know what they are but I don't know what each does. I have a stock 99 Scrambler 500 4x4. Is there any benefit to addressing any of these on my bike? I have went through 2 belts in the past month. With a new belt I can easily ride a wheelie by just flooring it from a dead stop. After a ride on the trails and through the mud I can feel the belt slipping. The belt usually last for about 3 weekends of riding then I replace it. Lets put it this way, my buddy has a stock 2001 Warrior and he is slowly pulling away from me out of the hole and on top. I am running stock size tires and stock size sprockets/chain. What do I need to check or replace? I am totally clueless with the clutching or anything associated with it. I have a general understanding but not complete. Anyone interested in offering a free class on CLUTCHING 101!

Thanks For All Your Help!

Do a search in the Polaris forum on clutching, You'll definetly find alot of answers, Basically if you are going to install a clutch kit go ahead and get one that is recomended with a pipe, The stock clutching usually works best with a stock bike, Get an Hpd pipe or RCR and go with there clutch set-up, On a side note order the new kevlar belt from HPD and your troubles for the time being shall cease!! I received my belt from HPD yesterday. I wanted to make sure about the clutching before I installed it on the bike.

Thanks

Scott,

The cause of your short belt life could be many things, but I think I can narrow it down to one. Your PVT cover gasket is shot. From what you've said the slipping only happens in the mud and water, right? Well, this is because you are getting water in it. When you get water in the belt housing and the clutch slips do you stop the machine, put it in neutral and rev it for a minute or two to get the water out? If you don't, this is why your belts don't last very long.

The solution is easy. First go to your dealer and get a new PVT cover gasket. Then, making sure that the old gasket is removed, apply a thin bead of silicone sealant to the inner clutch housing. Wait until the silicone gets tacky and install your gasket. Apply a thin bead of silicone to the gasket itself and put the clutch housing back on. When you put the screws back in, it is important to remember to put them in finger tight at first, then tighten them in a cross manner like you would a tire (front, back, upper and lower, one screw at a time).

It's important to remember that even if you do get this right, the clutch may still slip when you hit water. If it does, take it to your dealer and have him replace the inner gaskets. These go behind the front and rear clutches and will require the dealer to pull the clutches and the inner PVT cover. Have him check for proper alignment of the clutches while he is at it.

Even when this is all said and done, the clutches still may slip if you get into deep water or from splashing. When this happens, dry the clutches and belt before you continue to ride, by using the method I described in the first paragraph.

Hope this helps!
