anyone can explain why is the Sportman's coming out with 25-11-10 rear tires while most of competitors use 25-10-12 ? there is a greater choice with 12's .........

Bulli,

Could be wrong, but the SP has always run 25/11/10's on the rear; sure it has to do with research regarding weight and overall tire performance in conjunction with the IRS which takes a special wheel.

Why couldn't you just buy new wheels in the 12 inch size and run 25/11/12? This would give you less sidewall flex or rolling under of the tire. I could be wrong but I don't see that this would cause a problem.

I could be wrong, but:

The bigger a wheel the smooth it runs. Not necessary if you have IRS - it gives you already a smooth ride.

On the other hand:

The bigger the wheel the more torque tears onto the IRS & shaft during acceleration & pulling.

My explanation why just smaller wheels on a SP. But - I might be wrong so pls correct me if you think I am wrong.

you dont need to change the wheel size to run a wider tire. the wheels are only like 8-9 " wide now.

I don't know for sure but I would say Polaris uses the 10" rear wheels for the smoothest possible ride. More rubber equals more tire flex. 12" wheels are used on the after market big wheel kits on both the front and rear. In fact the new Limited Edition 500 Sportsman X model comes with the same 12" chrome wheels and Goodyear Rawhide tires as used on the 700 Sportsman both front and rear.
