I could be wrong, but:
The bigger a wheel the smooth it runs. Not necessary if you have IRS - it gives you already a smooth ride.
On the other hand:
The bigger the wheel the more torque tears onto the IRS & shaft during acceleration & pulling.
My explanation why just smaller wheels on a SP. But - I might be wrong so pls correct me if you think I am wrong.

I don't know for sure but I would say Polaris uses the 10" rear wheels for the smoothest possible ride. More rubber equals more tire flex. 12" wheels are used on the after market big wheel kits on both the front and rear. In fact the new Limited Edition 500 Sportsman X model comes with the same 12" chrome wheels and Goodyear Rawhide tires as used on the 700 Sportsman both front and rear.
