Just my observation.I have 99SP500 and 02Grizz660.
I do not understand how can the 700 win a tight woods contest./heavy steering and the weight/. The difference between my SP and the Grizz in the woods is like day and night. I can steer the Grizz with one hand easy...
Water- approaching in a slow speed both machines have no problem/no belt slip on the Polaris as claimed all the time , no problem with the Grizz./.
4X4- for all of you, who think that Polaris has a true 4x4,get experience with a differencial lock.
To me a limited slip differential only on any ATV is a joke. An electr. magnets on the Polaris is very good in most situations. Locking differential is unbeatable in all sitations./ I can crawl very steep, loose terrain with my Grizz with a steady gas without even slight digging my rear wheels, which i was unable with my SP/.
Weight-if Polaris made the shafts thinner and cut all the solid metal of the SP series quads incl. racks and bumpers and rims etc.it would achieve 600 lb. as well. They have a different bus. philosophie and it works for them. There's a lots of people who like Polaris. I am one of them.
I ride mostly in U.P. Michigan on very narrow, thick muddy trails. The Grizz is an excellent choice for this kind of terrain.
I have almost 5000 miles on my SP 500, I abused it, I flipped it few times NEVER had a mechanical problem. I only changed parts I destroyed /handlebars, plastic,/.
I have 700 miles on Grizzly,My bumper is bent and started rust, my racks are bent, my camo plastic is scratched, and it is noisy on deceleration......momentarily at a second Yamaha dealer, who is trying to find the problem...
Would I buy Yamaha Again...yes
Would I buy Polaris again..no
Would I buy the Polaris again if it had 600lb. and lockin' differential....absolutely!
Sorry for a such annoying, long post. This is my unbiased , honest opinion, someone may find it useful.

Until you drive a 700, which I have owned the 500 and now drive the 700 you cant really make an intelligent observation. The 700 is not a 500 with a 700 engine in it. It is truly a different quad. It handles much better, steers much easier and it has a much better suspension...........go drive one then report back on what you think.............

jefffox...The Polaris 4wd is not "locked" but it is a true 100% torque biased 4wd. If I move my 4wd switch into 4wd I still will be in 2wd until my rear wheels spin faster than my fronts. The percentage of speed that the rears need to be spinning faster than the fronts has been posted many times but I cant recall that figure right now. The only downside of the Polaris On Demand 4wd system is that you do need that slight slip of the rears before you get 4wd. I have no complaints with my 650s diff locking lever it is pretty simple to use but not quite as simple as the Polaris. When the Polaris 4wd is engaged you do have what you would refer to as a locked 4wd (both fronts receiving power) but that state will come and go as needed. Im sure you will get the complete technical run down on the workings of the Polaris 4wd, but this is my version in a quick explanation.
