Starter Noises???
#3
I dunno, your first problem sounds like the gear on the starter wasn't engaging with the gear on the crankshaft. I really have no idea what would cause that, other that perhaps the gear was somehow stuck. I wonder if perhaps that was the case, and the 10 minutes of running vibrated the gear enough to get it un-stuck.
Like I said, I really don't know, I'm just throwing some possibilities out there.

I have the same problem with my sp500 and it only got worse as time went by, Now it won't start at all with the starter. This is what I was told it could be:
1.Bad battery
2.Bad Starter brushes
3.Bad magneto
4.Bad bushings which could make it drag
And so far I charged the battery, still does the same thing.
Rebuilt the starter and put new brushes:now it turns a little faster but it now has a grinding sound. The magneto, didn't anything yet, and I probably won't touch it. Bad bushings for the bendix which could cause my grinding is the one I will be changing next. A good freind of mine is looking at it, and I hope he can fix it.
Muddy, I hope your problems get resolved as quick as possible.

Well, I got the word from my freind, it's as simple as a bad starter!!! Funny, the dealer didn't think the starter was bad when they changed the brushes!!! I think I will swap starters and swap dealers for that matter!
Anyone know how much $$$$ is a new starter???

For what it's worth, don't know if this will help or not but I have had a similar problem on my lawn tractor's electric start. It's a Kohler engine.
From time to time (thankfully seldom), the "bendix" stuck in the retracted position and the starter motor gear would not extend out and engage with the flywheel gear.
I took the starter apart and found that small seeds had somehow gotten into the helix gear on the "bendix". The seeds were preventing the starter gear from extending when power to the starter was applied.
A simple cleaning of that helix gear & shaft fixed the problem. Excessive grease on the same helix might do the same thing in cold weather.

DaveA is correct it is your bendix. It engages your flywheel to start the motor. What happens is it is getting stuck to your flywheel (it is not disengaging). By using your pull starter you freed it and that will allow your starter to work again. A new starter will run you $220+.

PitB...you're gonna cry when you get the Canadian retail price of that starter with the drive attached...over 700 bucks! My Scram is now a pull start only because of this.
PS: any of you "mod guys" got a starter and drive for sale?

It sounds like your Bendex gear...
Take your starter out.
Your Gear set will come right out with it...
If the gear teath are not all chewed up then
Take the gear set appart and clean it as good as you can (their is a roler clutch type mechanisem sealed inside...) soak it in Kerosene or Mineral Spirits then put a little grease on the slide. Do not put oil in the roler clutch... that will gum it up...
If this fails then you need to replace the gear set... (about $150 - $200 US)
Do not continue to use it like you described... it will not be able to be saved if it is too far gone...
