Sounds the same as my Trail Blazer. Problem was a warped rotor.

I had the same problem with my 1999 Sportsman 500. I took the brake
apart and saw it had an adjustment set screw on the back of the caliper. By turning it in counter-clockwise about a 1/4 turn, it closed up the slack between the brake pads and the rattle stopped. It puts pressure on the brake pads so they may wear out sooner but it stopped the rattle. I don't know if your Explorer has the same adjustment set screw or not but you could look to find it. Hope this helps you.

The allen screw in the caliper should be adjusted every so often. I adjust mine about once a month and this will help rear pad life by keeping the front pads adjusted properly. Jack up the front of the quad, spin the tire, screw the allen screw in until it stops the tire, and then back the screw off 1/4 turn or when the wheel spins with very little drag. Doing this will help both rear pad life and keep those rattles away.
