Hi,
Got a used Polaris 1997 400SportL. Need to repair starter. Any clues on best way to remove? Seems no easy access. Through square hole in skid plate or from topside? And- any clues as to whether this is a two brush or 4 brush motor? Want to purchase replacement kit and need right one. Guess I could wait until I remove it to find out hugh?
Thanks much for any assistance. Want to attack this problem this weekend.

1. Remove your skid plate
2. Remove the bracket holding the starter(remove only the bolts neede to drop the starter.)
3. Remove the recoil starter case.(there are 2 bolts inside holding the starter)
4. Remove the bolts holding the starter...the starter is removed!!
Good Luck

Thanks much for the advice!
It's removed. We're( my 13yr old motor head son and I) replacing the starter with an aftermarket cover and adding a lighter flywheel. I noticed there was no gasket and very little compound (it was actually very clean for a 1997) on the recoil cover. What do you recommend for a sealing compound around the housing so we can regain access at a later date if the lighter flywheel doesn't work out and we re-install the starter.

Advice,
Use the proper puller! If you use one that grabs the outside perimeter of the flywheel > the flywheel may crack (the metal is thin around the edge as opposed to the center.>> That's why they use a (3) hole puller with threads. I think you can find a puller at the automotive store that will work. Or you can make one out of a piece of alum. stock with the three holes and a center hole for the jacking rod.
Good luck,Text
