Just changed the fluid in the rear transmission on my Sportsman 335 and was shocked that the synthetic fluid cost 10 bucks a quart. Does anybody know what this fuild would be in the aftermarket. It had the consistancy of the 0-40 oil but is purple in color. Also changed the outer tie rod ends to the new style @ 19.75 each

I agree with you. It is pretty darn expensive! I too considered some other alternative however how often do you actually change your tranny oil? Once a year? I didn't think that it was worth the risk to run a inferior brand of oil in this application. That tranny is big bucks to replace or rebuild.

I would agree but, it really gets expensive when you got to do it for two of them at around the same time. I bought the machines one year apart so next time $20 bucks just for tanny fluid not to mention all the other oils. Oh well, you got to pay to play.

I use Mobil 1 synthetic 75W-90 gear oil. It sounds like a heavy weight gear oil, but is actually pretty thin. I use Mobil 1 synthetics everywhere I can. The gear oil is 7-8 bucks per quart, but I have to pay 12 bucks per quart for the polaris synthetic. I talked to my polaris mechanic and told him I'd be the guinnea pig using this stuff. He seamed to think it might be fine using it. Maybe this will save you a couple dollars. Were your tie-rod ends wore out? One of mine has a little slack in it @ about 350 miles. I'm considering the new ones.

My tie rods were worn out. I cut the rubber boot off of one and found it FULL of water and mud. No wonder they wore out. The originals were the ball and socket type while the replacements are the heim joint type with a rubber outer boot. They didn't look like they would seal any better, so i packed the boots full of grease to try to keep the water out.
