Thinking of putting speedometer(with odometer) on my 2000 scrambler 400 2x4.Would like to know my speed and how far I've traveled,to help decide how much further I can go before getting gas.We ride in Lowville NY area, and can put on 200 miles a day very easy. Found them in Polaris catalog, but it says they are for different model.(425 expedition) Has anyone put them on their scramblers? After market speedometers or The one from Polaris???? Any help would be appreciated!!!! Merry Christmas and Happy New Year to all!!!!!

I once saw one with a bicycle speedometer/odometer installed on it. It was one of those digital ones programmable for different tire sizes. It used magnets to measure speed (you put magnets on the wheel, and it measured speed by 'counting' the magnets as they go by. I THINK he epoxied 2 magnets on oppisite sides of the driveshaft going to the front wheels, and made a bracket for the sensor. If I remember right, you calibrate it by driving a certain distance, like one measured mile, and then fiddle with the calibration until it reads the right distance.
The owner dosn't live around here any more, so I can't ask him how it worked, but I DO remember him saying the speedo was MUCH cheaper than a Polaris one, and worked pretty good. I think it was even waterproof.

Polaris does make one and it retails for close to $200. It is the same speedo that the Sportsman uses. The mounts that are used make a super nice, clean look and does not look bulky at all. We have installed several and it is fairly easy.

I am using a $20 bike speedo and it works great. It is very easy to calibrate and the install was easy. Just make sure that you get one that uses 2 wires and not a shielded cable because you will have to lengthen it. My only complaint is that it is not lighted. It has speed, trip, odom.,elapse time, and a clock for 20 bucks, not bad in my opinion.

Go with a $99 - $120 GPS. Much more bang for the buck. A speedometer is the least of the things you will benefit from getting one of these.
