Detroit Lakes snowmobile race cleanup will top $45,000
Tony Kennedy
Star Tribune

Published Jan 17 2002
No fines were issued in connection with the accidental sinking of snowmobile trailers in Big Detroit Lake on Jan. 5, but public agencies involved in the cleanup expect payment for their services.

The cost to retrieve the 11 trailers and three heavy-duty pickups from shallow water near shore will exceed $45,000, said Gary Thompson of Detroit Lakes, owner of Tri-State Diving, the general contractor of the salvage operation.

Thompson said the state Department of Transportation and Detroit Lakes Fire Department joined private wrecker services and heavy equipment operators in submitting bills to him. In turn, Thompson will seek payment from the owners of the 11 sunken snowmobile trailers. A 12th trailer, attached to a truck, was driven off the fractured ice without assistance, Thompson said.

"On my end it's going to be $40,000-plus by the time it's all over," he said. "I just hope the insurance companies are going to treat us right."

Thompson said the Transportation Department wants money for redirecting traffic on nearby Hwy. 10. The Fire Department also is owed a routine fee for responding, he said. He didn't specify the charge.

Separately, the Minnesota Pollution Control Agency (MPCA) has submitted a bill for nearly $5,000 to the company that sanctioned the weekend racing event that drew the trailers. The vehicles were closely parked in a row when the ice broke about 4:30 a.m. No one was injured, and all snowmobiles and many petroleum products were removed before the trailers sank over a period of several hours as the broken ice was removed from the lake.

"As far as we know, the spillage was minimal," said Doug Bellefeuille of the MPCA in Detroit Lakes.

The MPCA wants reimbursement for sending a private cleanup crew. No cleanup was required, but the team from Morris-based West Central Environmental Consultants Inc. stood by in case they were needed, Bellefeuille said.

"It's our obligation to recover the costs," he said. "Otherwise it's you and me and our tax dollars paying for someone else's mess."

The MPCA bill went to Wally Scheer of World Snowmobile Association Pro Ice of Rogers. Asked how it will be paid, Scheer said, "It isn't all figured out yet."

Becker County Sheriff Warren Rethwisch said no one faces sanctions. The ice, which was 13 inches at its thickest, gave way because the vehicles were "too heavy and too close together," he said. "I don't know why they were so close. There's a whole big lake out there."
