ok this may sound dumb but does it hurt to start my quad with the recoil and is there anything i can do to keep the cord from roting thanks

No harm done except to your muscles.

Chances are that you will wear the rope out pull-starting before it will rot. There's not much you can do to stop the cord from deteriorating.

If the cord does "rot", it's not that difficult to replace. More than likely, you will break the knot at the end of the rope b4 it will rot away.
