I would have brought it down to Virginia except there isn't anywhere to ride it (that I know of). BTW- my Raptor is not stock...

Where are you at in Virginia? There are plenty of places to ride around here.

I'm stuck in Newport News (researching at NASA). If there are places to go, please let me know!!! While I may not be able to go pick up my quad for a few months, I do have my '97 Jeep TJ (with Detroit Tru-tracs front and rear, Tera 2T lift, and 31" Goodyear Wrangler MT/R tires), and I love to go off-roading. I was thinking about getting a dirtbike down here, unless a real hot sport quad comes out any time soon...

You should give the guys at http://www.cornfedsuspension.com/ a call. They are in portsmouth and last I talked to them there was a 4x4 club down there. I have a truck too, but usually only take it wheelin during hunting season.

There used to be an ATV park in Surry called Slades, not sure if it's still open. You should just ask around down there, I'm sure there are plenty of places to ride, you can probably find people on the local powerlines any weekend. I think I remember seeing somewhere that there is a dirtbike club in the area too, check with the local shops. I'll be riding all day Saturday in Sussex.

also check out Tidewater FourWheelers

AlaskaYFM, you must not be getting what I'm saying. There are some of us out here who have taken over 100lbs off our machines, and more than doubled the horsepower. I've taken modded 'shees', raptors, and Ds's on nitrous. Don't mean to start a pissing contest, but until you've ridden a true modded Polaris (I'm not bragging here) you really can't be a source for comparison. We all have our faves, especially ergonomically. I love the looks of some of the Yammies, but to me, the ergos on them suck....again just another persons opinion, but at least I've taken the time to personally sit on one. Now go out and find a race-modded Polaris, give it a rip, then sound off. You may not like the ergos, but the performance will speak for itself.

You guys have brought up an interesting topic, ergonomics.

I know alot of people, most people, like that small feeling. I mean this in the sence that the Raptor, 400EX, Warrior, 300EX, Banshee, and so on, all have a smaller feel and size than the Polaris and even the DS650. I am not relating so much to the weight, just the overall size and ergonomics because of it. I personally find it awkward trying to stand up, pull in the clutch and shift gears on these smaller machines. Ecspecially while trying to ride fast on a rough and technical trail. I am not saying that these smaller machines are inferior, just stating my preference. It is alot easier for me to push the lever on the right to go faster and pull the lever on the left to go slower. Then all I have to worry about is not hitting any trees. This makes it alot easier for me to go faster because I can concentrate on the trail alot more.

I just personally like the feel of riding a machine that is bigger. It makes me feel more confident. At first a didn't care for the higher center of gravity but I got used to it and now even prefer to be sitting higher. I can stand up and sit down at will and it doesn't leave me all crouched over while trying to ride standing up.

I hear all the time about how the Polaris floor boards and width of the foot stance are not good for aggressive trail riding. I personally like the the way they feel. I don't see why so many people think that it is uncomfortable. A wider foot stance gives you a more stable stance, at least it is does for me and Pontiac.

I'm not saying any of this to bash any one particular quad. I am just merely stating my unwanted $.02. Everyone should ride what they like, thats why I ride Polaris.

Thanks for the info, JayBR, I'll look into it. I just don't what to 'wheel on land that will land me in jail or get me shot.

modquad, I guess I didn't realize the extent to which you meant with an HPD-modified Polaris. Usually when I hear about HPD, I just think pipe, filter, and clutch mods. I'm sure that they probably go fast in a straight line and all, but I live to slide (needless to say, a stock Raptor isn't that fun), jump, and go through tight woods. Do you do alot of dune riding? Also, if it doesn't have gears, I feel you loose some ridability. Again personal preference... But, how could you not like the ergos of a Raptor? I seemed right at home swinging a leg on that machine after riding my Honda 250R for years. I don't like the Banshee ergos, it is very uncomfortable. So dare I ask the mods done to your Polaris?

elroy, once you ride for a few years you find that the controls on a sport quad come naturally and you can concentrate on the trail without worrying about braking, shifting, and clutching. It just comes with time and practice.

Like I said, it's personal preference. Forgot to mention my ownership in titanium fabricators of America.

Not all jet mechanics turbines.....some still like two-strokes....hmmm how can I put a CFM56 on a quad????

Elroy,
I hear ya man. I could not have said it better.
Ya know, Polaris would not have three years in testing
if they would just change the chasy and put some light
weight material on the scramblers. The engine speaks
for itself!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

high bypass is fine, but if you are going to go that route, modquad, you might as well go all out and use a F119 with thrust-vectoring...
