I live in Northern BC Canada. I was searching the net for used parts for my 1991 Trailboss 250 when I happened across a recycler in Kentucky. These morons there don't want my business. I was interested in a used clutch cover assy, I inquired about the price. No problem, they would ship it via UPS whenever I was ready. I told them I was in Canada and was sondering if they would be so kind to accomodate me and ship it via regular mail as UPS to Canada is fairly expensive and usually outweighs any benefits of buying used parts.

All of a sudden their tune changed! "The minimum order to Canada is $1000.00 US funds." I responded "What are you kidding me, are you nuts!!!" They claim that if they had to take it to the post office then I would have to spend 1000.00. What a bunch of idiots. So I counter offered by saying it would be ok to ship UPS then if it was too much trouble. They said, "No that's ok....we'll just sell these parts here in the US. We aren't interested in shipping anything to Canada." I was mad. Are we Canadians not too popular is Kentucky? Are they that bad down there? Too much inbreeding?
Anyways I just wanted to share my gripe. I dare not mention the name of the business that I will never call on again. I fear the moderators on this site will remove my post.

Reaching an inept merchant, wherever his business and wherever you may be located appears unfortunate, Keithb! (Just ask a number of US citizens frustrated in their dealings with a certain California establishment, reported on the Forum.)

However, your unfortunate experience doesn't justify your generalized regional prejudice, e.g., attributing your misfortune to "inbreeding" in Kentucky.

Your problem, as you describe it, was caused by one individual. Condemning an entire population for the action of one member seems clearly unfair. You'd object to someone classifying all Canadians based upon the misbehavior of one of your citizens.

You owe the citizens of Kentucky an apology.

Tree Farmer

P.S. How do you know the clerk wasn't a Canadian immigrant?

As a private indivual I sold a used pipe to someone in Canada and shipped it UPS and thought all was OK. Until the guy in Canada sent me a copy of a UPS COD receipt he received. Canada charges tariff on merchandice going across the border which was 30-40% of declared value. You can falsify the value, loose money or jack up prices. I do not intend to do any international commerce again. By the way I do live in Kentucky and am not associated with the dealer you are dealing with. If you want to bend the laws of your country you may be able to find someone else to accomodate you. 75 bucks will teach most people a lesson including me.

We ship items to canada every day. We ship through the US postal service. It is actually cheaper most of the time for us to ship something to canada than to ship it inside the USA. We have not tried to ship anything UPS to canada as they are just to expensive to start with most of the time.

Sorry to the residents of Kentucky. I should not have made such a broad remark calling all of you "inbreeds". Just the folks at AT*#$ Salvage are.
I did decide to purchase my parts locally at my Polaris dealer, they are very good to me. There won't be a next time as I plan to keep my future purchases in Canada.

I had to find a way to get around the customs hassle of buying from the U.S. and did that by shipping to my brother in Chicago, and then arranging someone travelling there to pick up and bring back to Canada. I agree that the customs issue is a real hassle. And wait time is big time, I live in about the middle (east to west) of Canada, and shipping takes it either to Toronto or all the way west to Vancouver to clear customs. I remember a while back there was a free trade agreement somewhere, wasn't there? Up here in the cold desolate north, all I've got is a local dealer who sold me the 4 wheeler. I had to do ALL of my shopping and looking to the U.S. for bolt ons. This even meant new rims to fit rubber that I bought in the States. I wish there was a better way. Heck, the UPS guy that delivers to me has to farm out his business to a local guy with a van who comes around once a week! One of these days I'll have to get into some black market parts, like they did with cigarettes crossing the U.S./Canada border. And hey, our dollar is worth so much, probably around 68 cents to the U.S. dollar. Its no wonder a dealer in the U.S. would not want to deal with us poor Canadians. Probably thinks he'll get paid in Canadian currency. I don't do that. I live in Canada but deal in U.S. dollars. Hell, our money ain't worth #@&%!

Folks,

As many of you have confirmed it is expensive getting things shipped into Canada by courier, particularly UPS.

Case in point: On a recent trip to Los Angeles the wife and I decided to pick up two camp chairs at a cost of $65 USD each. They were not in stock so we had friends ship them up - big mistake.

- first the friend left the two (6x6x36" long) boxes seperate instead of taping them together. Cost to ship via UPS - $25 US each.

- second a notice arrives from UPS indicating that $40.44 CDN is required to receive EACH box. They explain this is customs fees, local taxes, handling charges, AND a COD fee for the money owed. What do they mean handling fee? What was the original $25 shipping charge for? COD fee? Could I have paid the $40.44 up front - NO! Then how can you charge me a COD fee? Was the sender notified that I would have to pay ransom to receive the parcel - NO!
Needless to say I was pissed. The UPS rep told me to go somewhere else if I didn't like it. Damn right I will. I will hand carry the stuff across as SWAC points out or I will use good old snail mail.

FYI the chairs all converted to Canadian dollars cost:

2 chairs x ($65x1.45) + ($25 x 1.45) + ($40.44)

This totals $342 for two camp chairs! They are now referred to as the gold chairs.

Free trade as long as the Government and UPS are not involved!

Keith,
You should be pissed at YOUR Canadian Govt. not the guys in KY. ITs your socialist, liberalist government which demands its citizrns pay out the teeth for anything, shipping included. And another point, Have you been anywhere around the world. Some merchants in Asian countries will not even help you while you are standing in line until the "natives" are taken care of first. SO I guess it happens everywhere...

While I may be both "ignorant and from Kentucky"
I do know how to spell both words correctly.
